Málaga coach Míchel attended the media this afternoon to preview tomorrow's midday meeting with Deportivo. With his team rooted to the foot of the table, Michel already has enough on his plate - but earlier this week, Carlos Valderrama appeared in a video to raise awareness of testicular cancer, using the famous footage of the former madridista grabbing his crotch during a league game in the early 1990s. Míchel says he's not happy with the campaign and that was why he refused to be involved.
Málaga boss Míchel slams Valderrama's ball-grab video
Carlos Valderrama has starred in a video in which he thanks you for "touching his balls". Did you give persmission for your image to be used? “No I didn't and claims that I did are completely false. I did not give my consent. I was offered the chance to take part in the campaign but I am very sensitive about these matters - both publicly and privately. And that have treated what is a very, very delicate issue quite friviously in my opinion. If I had given my permission, I would have been involved in this supposed campaign. I am not involved because I am already involved in many other projects which are equally deserving of interest but it is not true that I gave my consent to that campaign”.
So you didn't speak to Valderrama about it? “That is also a lie. There's been a complete lack of sensitivity. I am not in favour of using that image for that kind of message. Showing sensitivity is very important for the families who are going through a very tough time deaking with cancer. I didn't like how it was done and I'd prefer to distance myself from the prommotion, campaign or whatever you want to call it. I'm not the only one who said they didn't want to be a part of it. It was also claimed that the Spanish Association for the Battle to beat Cancer were behind it and they weren't. So someone's not telling the truth. In fact the Association wanted to take their anagram off the video. I don't like how the video has turned out that's all there is to it. Do I think Valderrama appears frivolous? That's his problem. I don't think cancer is anything to be frivolous about”.
