The next Trofeo Santiago Bernabéu could reportedly see Real Madrid host Argentina's River Plate as a tribute to Alfredo Di Stéfano, who played for both clubs.
2018 Trofeo Bernabéu slated for post-World Cup date
La Nación journalist Gustavo Yarroch says that no date has been set for the 2018 edition of Real's annual pre-season invitational match, but that it would be expected to be held in either July or August, after the World Cup in Russia.
Después del Mundial de Rusia, en julio o agosto, River podría jugar un amistoso ante el Real Madrid, en España, por la Copa Bernabéu. River have previously been chosen as the guests for the Trofeo Bernabéu, which began in 1979 and was initially a four-team tournament, losing 3-1 in Madrid in 2003.
Di Stéfano turned out for Real Madrid and River Plate
Argentina-born Di Stéfano, who died in 2014, started his career at the Buenos Aires club, before becoming a Real great during an 11-year spell with Los Blancos.
The fixture, named after the LaLiga giants' legendary former player, coach and club president, was played for the 38th time this August, with Real Madrid beating Serie A side Fiorentina 2-1 courtesy of goals by Borja Mayoral and Cristiano Ronaldo.
