Real Madrid 2-2 Fuenlabrada Copa del Rey: goals, action, match report
Real Madrid progress to the Last 16 of the Copa del Rey despite sharing four goals with third-tier Fuenlabrada on Tuesday evening.
Luis Milla put the minnows ahead in the first half with a swirling shot from the edge of the box, with a helping hand from Keylor Navas’ shoddy goalkeeping. Fuenlabrada then hit the crossbar in the second half before Borja Mayoral converted Gareth Bale’s sumptuous cross just after the hour mark.
Mayoral profited from Bale’s resourcefulness again on 70 minutes to put Madrid ahead, but the visitors secured an historic draw in the last minute through substitute Álvaro Portilla.
Los Blancos go through 4-2 on aggregate thanks to victory in the first leg. But it was a woefully stodgy performance at the Bernabéu.
MOTM: Gareth Bale. The Welshman made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute, setting up both of Mayoral’s goals. He now has more assists (5) than Isco or Cristiano Ronaldo (4 each).
Real Madrid 2-2 Fuenlabrada: as it happened
Real Madrid are held to a 2-2 draw by Fuenlabrada at the Bernabéu, but progress to the next round of the Copa del Rey courtesy of a 0-2 victory in the first leg. Mayoral scored both goals for the home side, who were invigorated by the introduction of Gareth Bale. Luis Milla and Portilla scored for the third-division visitors.
90'+2' Corner for Real Madrid.
90' Three minutes of added time. They couldn't win it, could they?
89' GOOOOOOOL! Fuenlabrada equalise through Portilla! Navas saves his initial effort, but the rebound bounces straight back for him to slot in to the bottom corner. What a result for the third-tier outfit.
88' Dioni has a very good opportunity to score the equaliser. He takes advantage of Theo's positional liberalism to scoot down the right. Nobody closes him down so he cuts on to his left foot and drags the ball in to the side netting.
85' Fuenlabrada have their first foray in to opposition territory for a while, and they win a corner from it as Cristóbal's shot skims off Llorente's shoulder and behind. Cata Díaz meets it at the far post, but Bale is well positioned to take it down in the six-yard box and clear.
83' Mayoral stretches desperately for his hat-trick. If only he'd eaten a few more greens when he were a nipper. Achraf's cross whistles over his head.
83' Cata Díaz, who has a face like the chiselled edge of an Alpine mountain, is booked for a shove on Ceballos.
82' Gareth Bale now has more assists this season (5) than Cristiano Ronaldo and Isco (both 4).
81' A final Real Madrid change: Kovacic off, Seoane on.
79' That's Yaw lot. He goes off and Quero comes on.
78' Fuenlabrada are starting to look a bit leggy. Yaw arrives late on Ceballos and concedes a free-kick on the touchline.
75' Real Madrid sub: Óscar trots off, Quezada trots on.
73' Gareth Bale is at it again, flashing a dangerous ball along the slippery wooden floor of the corridor of uncertainty. Moments later he has the ball in the net, but the linesman's flag is up in the background.
70' GOOOOOOOOL! Once again, Mayoral scores but Bale dazzles. The No.11 flicks the ball over his head with a gorgeous flick of the heel and stabs the ball towards goal. Pol parries, but only as far as Mayoral, who tucks it in to the corner. There was a strong hint of offside against Bale.
69' Fuenlabrada make a second change, introducing Portilla in the place of Bravo, who hasn't shaken off that twisted ankle.
68' Yaw's touch escapes him on the right. Instead of charging towards goal, he has to readjust and cross. His delivery is good, and Hugo Fraile forces a corner at the far post. It comes to nothing.
65' Álvaro Bravo is down in a heap after turning his ankle in an attempt to close down Bale. That was a wince-inducing twist.
63' GOL GOL GOL! Gareth Bale makes an instant, decisive impact. He takes the ball down on the right and delivers an exquisite cross with the outside of his left foot. Borja Mayoral meets it at the far post, nods it in to the ground, and it goes in via the underside of the bar.
62' Both sides make a change: Dioni replaces the excellent Matheus for Fuenla, and Gareth Bale comes on for Franchu.
60' Fuenla hit the bar! The free-kick drops in from a wide area and Cata Díaz meets it with a looping header that thuds off the bar, sending droplets of water down. The Bernabéu seeths.
60' Óscar swiftly follows him in to the book for hauling down Hugo Fraile on the flank.
59' Matheus is the first player in to the book. He closed down Llorente, arrived a tad late, and trod on his foot.
58' Matheus tries again... rolling Tejero and shooting towards the near post on the bounce. He catches the ball an absolute treat, but it fizzes wide and slaps in to the advertising hoarding.
57' Oooooh, sharp save from Navas at the near post from Matheus' glancing header.
56' Theo Hernándex commits an absolutely idiotic foul. Yaw is flying towards the corner flag, going nowhere. Theo shoves him in the back and all of a sudden a goal kick turns in to an attacking set piece.
55' Franchu is the latest player to be robbed of the ball upon entry to the box.
53' Real Madrid are coming forward in waves. But each wave is halted by the imposing central-defensive pairing of Díaz and Juanma, who are both structurally similar to a brick outhouse.
51' Álvaro Tejero takes advantage of a pocket of space in front of him to fizz a swirling shot towards the bottom corner. It looks like it might sneak inside the post until Pol throws himself down to parry it wide.
49' That was... audacious from Matheus. The No.9 receives the ball just inside his own half, has a glance up, and tries to wedge the ball over Navas from 60 yards. The crowd take a sharp intake of breathe before collectively exhaling as the ball bounces wide.
49' Gareth Bale is trotting up and down the touchline. His introduction appears imminent.
48' A fresh barrage of whistles hiss down from the stands as Theo lets Marcos Llorente's pass roll under his studs and out of play.
46' Cata Díaz blocks Ceballos in the box with a rather agricultural challenge that constrasts nicely with the Real Madrid man's array of stepovers. The referee files it away in the 'hard but fair' draw.
46' Peeep! Pablo González Fuentes blows his whistle to get a highly-significant half underway for Real Madrid.
Out come the Real Madrid players for the second half. No sign of Gareth Bale yet.
Whistles ring out at the Bernabéu. The hotch-potch mix of fringe players and Castilla promotees are playing with a total lack of cohesion. Fuenlabrada's brave and astute performance makes for quite the contrast. One team looks like it has been coached. The other doesn't.
45' The Fuenlabrada fans wave the flags in jubilation as the referee blows for half time.
44' Mateo Kovacic twists and turns with that languid style of his before slotting a ball to Ceballos on the edge of the box. The No.24 has space in front of him and should hit the target from 20 yards out. Instead, he tonks it in to the stands.
42' Pol is forced in to a save for the first time, as Franchu rides a couple of challenges on his way in from the right before curling a shot towards the bottom corner. It's pretty comfortable for the 'keeper but he dives anyway. Perhaps he feels guilty for not having any mud on his shorts yet.
41' Juanma bloks Ceballos' shot on the edge of the box and Marcos Llorente lifts the follow-up over the bar.
40' With five minutes until the break, Real Madrid are yet to create a clear chance.
38' Franchu faces up against Fran García, who sticks with him right to the byline and blocks the ball behind for a corner. The delivery plops down at the feet of Álvaro Bravo, who calmy strides out.
34' Fuenla apply pressure on Navas and Tejero with a suffocating high-press. Yaw almost harries Nacho in to a catastrophic error on the edge of the box, but he just manages to pass the ball back to Navas. This time, rather than looking short, the Costa Rica international lumps it long.
33' Ceballos is frantically fumbling around for the scruff of this game's neck. The 21-year-old, who many Real Madrid fans have wanted to see in the team in the last few weeks, is full of footwork, twists, and turns.
29' Theo barges Yaw over in the box, but the Fuenlabrada winger was already off balance.
28' Real Madrid appeal for a penalty. Franchu's cross-cum-shot slaps Juanma on the hand. It looked like the centre-half was trying to get his arms out of the way, so it would have been a harsh one to award.
26' GOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLL! Fuenlabrada lead! The ball pops out to Luis Milla on the edge of the box. He takes a touch to steady himself and curls a shot at the centre of goal Keylor Navas gets a weak hand to it, which serves only to push the ball on to the underside of the crossbar and across the line.
25' Corner to the away side as Nacho is forced to turn Fran García's free-kick behind.
23' Kovacic, looking rather sluggish on his first appearance since September, sells Ceballos short and gives the ball away in the centre circle. Luis Milla and Bravo combine neatly for Fuenla to create space for Yaw on the right. He delivers a heavy cross that evades everyone.
21' Yaw feigns towards Fran García's pass down the wing, then drops his shoulder and lets the ball roll across his body before accelerating down the wing and away from Achraf. Nice idea, but once again he strayed offside.
19' Dani Ceballos is going to fizz a free-kick in from near the corner flag. Fran García heads it away initially at the near post, but only as far as Achraf. He knocks the ball to Óscar at the far post, who loses the ball with an air shot. After a rough first ten minutes, Madrid are gaining the upper hand.
17' Fuenlabrada are a very impressive collective. They're comfortable in possession with constant movement in midfield. Clearly well-coached, and it takes cojones to travel to the Bernabéu as a third-tier side and try to take the game to the home side.
16' Franchu looks like an eyebrow-raising prospect. The 19-year-old Argentine has displayed quick feet and darting runs on the right flank.
13' Theo Hernández rumbles up to full speed for the first time. When it comes to delivering the ball, he isn't quite as impressive. His cross is overhit and the visitors clear.
12' Fran García marauds forward from left-back, plays a one-two with Cristóbal, and dinks the ball over to Yaw on the right wing. The No.7 takes a touch to set him through on goal... but the linesman hoists his flag.
9' Fuenlabrada are absolutely all over Real Madrid. It's quite astonishing. Matheus makes a sharp run in to the box and shuffled slightly before rifling a right-shooted shot at goal, which Keylor Navas blocks away with his legs.
7' It's the away side applying pressure in the opening stages. Fran García tries to slip the ball through to Matheus on the edge of the box. Alas, the two blue-shirted players are on different wavelengths.
5' WHAT A MISS! Fuenlabrada squander a superb chance to take the lead. Cristóbal dashes towards the near post to meet Matheus' cut-back. He gets there ahead of Achraf but somehow leathers it the wrong side of the post from six yards away.
4' A stray pass from Achraf allows Bravo to play a neat ball to Cristóbal, who twists and turns on the edge of the box but can't get a shot away.
2' Cristóbal has a dash forward in the centre of the pitch, but quickly turns back from a blind alley and plays the ball off to his centre-half. Real Madrid win the ball back and force a corner in front of a sea of empty blue seats. It falls for Óscar on the far side of the box and the debutant shanks his cross behind.
1' Borja Mayoral gets the match underway!
The teams are out in a sparsely-populated Bernabéu and the handshakes are in full flow.
Numancia have knocked out Málaga down at La Rosaleda... that could well be an early taste of Segunda División action for Míchel's side.
Fuenlabrada XI: Pol; Ismael, Cata Díaz, Juanma, Fran García; Yaw, Milla, Bruno, Fraile; Cristóbal, Matheus.
Óscar, Franchu, and Tejero are the three Castilla players to step in to the starting line-up this evening. Óscar is a 19-year-old attacking midfielder who has scored three goal in two matches in the UEFA Youth League. Franchu is a 19-year-old winger from Argentina. Tejero is a 21-year-old utility defender who has flirted between the senior squad and Castilla over the last 18 months.
Substitutes: Casilla, Bale, Quezada, Hernando, Seoane.
Real Madrid XI: Navas; Achraf, Nacho, Tejero, Theo; Llorente, Kovacic, Ceballos; Franchu, Mayoral, Óscar.
Real Madrid have coerced some supporters in to attendance tonight. The club released a statement that fans in the "Grada de animación", a singing section behind the goal at the south end of the stadium, that they will not be able to attend the clásico against Barcelona on 23 December if they do not show up for Fuenlabrada.
It has been a pricey day for Marcelo. The Brazilian left-back has agreed to pay just under 500,000 euros to Spain's inland revenue after admitting to tax fraud at a Madrid court today. He is not in the Real Madrid squad this evening, so Theo Hernández will have a chance to stretch his legs.
Fuenlabrada have an Englishman in their ranks. Conor O'Keefe's account of how a year abroad from Loughborough University led him to the Segunda B is fascinating. Read more about the resourceful young goalkeeper in this interview with The Guardian.
A sight too often seen.
At a current rate of 13,593 euros per minute, Gareth Bale will be looking to pay back some of that investment in the Copa. It may only be against lowly Fuenlabrada but a strong showing and he could be in line for a start against Athletic on Saturday night. Zidane will probably just accept the Welshman coming off the field with no sign of further niggles.
It's been a great effort from the visting club tonight as they laid on 22 coaches to get their fans to the Bernabéu to make some noise. Those buses may not be needed if their team pull off a shock result, but the capital bars should get plenty of action!
Bale is back in a Real Madrid squad for the first time in 63 days, having been sidelined ever since limping out of Los Blancos' Champions League win at Borussia Dortmund in late September...
