The Camp Nou club announced the renewal on its website on Thursday morning. The Spain defender's last deal was due to expire in June 2019.

FC Barcelona issued a statement on Thursday morning confirming that Spain defender Gerard Piqué has signed a contract extension at Camp Nou to keep him at the club until 2022. The new deal also includes a 500 million euro minimum release clause.

Piqué will celebrate his 31st birthday in February and if he sees out the remainder of his new deal he will be 35 when it expires. During his Barcelona career Piqué has won 25 titles at club level: six Ligas, three Champions Leagues, three Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, five Spanish Super Cups and five Copas del Rey. At international level the defender was part of the Spain squads that won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup. In 421 games for Barcelona, Piqué has scored 37 goals.

Sergio Roberto and Samuel Umtiti next in line

Negotiations between the parties were carried out with considerable discretion and the player is expected to put to paper in the coming days. With Piqué renewed, Barcelona will turn their attention to an extension for Sergi Roberto and an improved contract offer for Samuel Umtiti, who has been the subject of interest from the Premier League.
