Real Madrid 1-2 Leganés Copa del Rey quarter-final: goals, as it happened
JESUS ALVAREZ ORIHUELA DIARIO AS

The stands had long been empty, but the Leganés players were still out there. Singing and dancing. Sharing the moment with their families. The commuter town to the south of Madrid stepped out of the shadow on a memorable night at the Bernabéu.

Javi Eraso and Gabriel Pires scored either side of a Karim Benzema equaliser to send Leganés to the semi-final of the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid are now out of the LaLiga title race and out of the cup. If Zinedine Zidane's side fail to navigate the substantial, PSG-shaped challenge they face in the Champions League, they will be on holiday from March.

It was a night of records for both teams. Leganés will be in the draw for the semi-final for the first time in the club's history. This is the first time Madrid have lost a tie at the Bernabéu after winning the first leg. Madridistas will erase January 24, 2018 from their memories. For Lega, it is another stop on their enthralling journey to the top of Spanish football.

Real Madrid 1-2 Leganés: as it happened

If they didn't before, Zidane's hopes now lie exclusively on the Champions League match against PSG.

The match-winner Gabriel Pires: "I don't know what to say. It's great feeling. It's something that nobody thought could happen, but the team did. We've achieved something big."

This is the first time that Real Madrid have lost a Copa del Rey tie after winning the first leg for the first time ever. Never before in the 115-year history of the cup.

Whistles galore at the Bernabéu as Gabriel pumps his fists to the away supporters.

90'+3' FT! Leganés knock Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey and go through to the semi-final.

90'+3'   Modric overhits a pass to Carvajal and it's out of play. The referee will blow any second.

90'+3'   Theo tries to barge all the way through the centre, takes a heavy touch, and loses it. Leganés bound forward but lose it themselves.

90'+2'   Carvajal crosses straight in to Champagne's arms.

90'   Three minutes of added time.

90'   Carvajal forces another corner, takes it short to Lucas, who passes it straight out for a goal kick with his attempt at the return ball.

89'   Dreadful delivery from Modric, which Lega clear at the near post. Madrid keep up the pressure and appeal limply for a penalty as Ramos flops down in the box.

89'   Real Madrid have a corner.

87'   The crowd shout for handball as Naranjo takes the ball down with his shoulder before attempting to chip Casilla. His effort lacks finesse and floats in to the sparsely populated stand behind the goal.

86'   Champagne welcomes Carvajal's deflected cross in to his arms and Leganés have a brief excursion in the opposition half.

85'   Ramooooosss..! Champagne tips his header over the bar!

83'   It's all Real Madrid. The home side have set up camp in the Leganés half. Whether they can break down the organised defence, however, is another question. Lega have shown no signs of letting their concentration lapse so far.

81'   Big chance for Benzema. Big save from Champagne. The striker lingers on the edge of the box for Carvajal's cut-back and meets it with a first-time shot. It's well-struck from near the penalty spot, but the 'keeper doesn't have to move too far to parry it clear.

81' Garitano makes a final change: Naranjo for El Zhar.

80' Superb hold-up play from Claudio Beauvue draws a grappling foul from Sergio Ramos. The Madrid captain is booked for his troubles.

79'   Casilla is calm under pressure from Nabil El Zhar. The 'keeper races out of his box and plays a crisp pass to Carvajal, rather than hoofing the ball back to Leganés.

78' Zidane makes his final change, sending on Borja Mayoral for Isco.

77'   Real Madrid have Lega penned back, delivering a series of corners, until Carvajal fells Rico at the far post and concedes a foul.

76' After a series of warning, Champagne goes in to the book for time wasting. It draws the first cheer in a while from the home crowd.

75'   Lucas loses the ball and then loses his temper, kicking out at Eraso as he strode away from the box.

73'   The ball drops for Theo on the edge of the box. He sees his name in the headlines... airshot. Isco is the next Real Madrid player to have a go. He jinks inside, aims for the top corner, and curls it over.

71'   Oooh, Beauvue spins and lays the ball off to Eraso. He's ready to shoot across goal until Theo flies in with a vital block to defelct the ball behind for a corner, which Lega waste.

71' Amrabat ambles off the pitch. Raúl García runs on in his place.

70'   Ramos gets a little excited and shoots from 35 yards. He drags it wide.

69' Double change for Los Blancos: Carvajal for Achraf, Modric for Llorente.

68'   Champagne gets a final warning for time-wasting as Zidane prepares his substitutes.

66'   Mantovani stretches to prevent Isco finding Lucas in the box. Important interception. Real Madrid maintain the pressure until Kovacic lashes a loose ball half way to orbit from the edge of the box. The whistles are getting louder and louder.

65'   Champagne is already wasting time for Lega, and who can blame him.

64'   Isco races on to Lucas's back-heel. He's slipping backwards as he shoots and Bustinza is able to block.

63'   Theo dances beyond Tito in the box, resisting the temptation to fall over. He probably should have done, as his cross from the byline is wildly overhit. Subtlety is not one of his strong points.

61'   Martin Mantovani, who has just replaced Siovas, hauls down Benxema 30 yards out. Asensio stands over the dead ball... and shoots straight in to the wall.

60'   Beauvue tries to nip in front of Nacho and latch on to a long ball, but fouls the defender in the process.

58'   Zidane may not be regretting his decision to name a substitutes bench without Bale or Ronaldo.

55' GOL GOL GOOOOOOOL! Gabriel with the dictionary definition of a bullet header! Theo fails to stick to his man, who meets Javi Eraso's out-swinger with an absolute thumper in to the top corner. Leganés are going through on away goals, as it stands.

51'   Diego Rico takes a devilish corner that comes straight back out to him. He nutmegs Lucas and puts the ball back in the mixer. It looks like it might fall for about four different players, but doesn't quite sit down and Madrid emerge on the counter-attack with Isco. He waltzes forward the ball is worked to Achraf. He finally delivers a dangerous cross, which Bustinza is equal to.

47' GOOOOOOL! Karim Benzema scores his first goal since November! The No.9 points to where he wants the ball, Lucas obliges, and he chips the ball past Champagne from an acute angle. It's fair to say he needed that goal.

46'   Oh, Theo. The full-back fails to control a pass and then proceeds to fall over himself.

46' Leganés get the second half going!

Real Madrid have not had a single shot on target in the first half. That has only happened one other time this season... against Leganés in the first leg.

Whistles around the Bernabéu as the referee brings the first half to an end. On this evidence, Sunday's result owed more to Deportivo's acquiescence rather than a Real Madrid resurgence.

45' HT.

45'   Beauvue flashes an acrobatic effort just wide of goal after Gabriel heads a long throw to the far post. It looked like it was arrowing in to the same top corner that Eraso found to open the scoring.

42'   Eraso concedes a silly foul on the edge of his own box. His crime is a shove in Lucas Vazquez's back. But the Real Madrid man wasn't going anywhere. Marco Asensio fizzes the ball over the wall and onwards over the bar.

40'   Theo has the ball on the left after an incisive burst forward from the home side. He cuts the ball towards the edge of the box, Isco lets it run through his legs, and Eraso retreats enough to drill it out for a corner, which Lega clear.

38'   Benzema is a premature haircut away from converting Isco's inviting cross with a diving header.

37'   Gabriel dispossesses Isco and the ball breaks for Beauvue, while Gabriel continues his run on the outside. Beauvue looks for his team-mate, but gets caught up in a flurry of step-overs and loses the ball. Lega would have mounted a more effective counter if their roles were reversed.

35'   Nacho switches back on to block Diego Rico's cross, with Beauvue lurking behind him. Real Madrid are pegged back in their own half at the moment.

32' GOL GOL GOL! Javi Eraso puts Leganés ahead! Nacho fails to deal with an awkward pass from Achraf. Eraso sneaks in to the gap, looks up, and curls the ball in to the top corner from 25 yards. Game on!

31'   Lucas tries to thread the ball through to Benzema. The No.17 is looking for a gap that isn't there, and Lega clear.

28' Tito is the first player in to the book for a cynical foul on Isco, just outside the box. A clear obstruction and no complaints from the bearded full-back. Isco gets up and takes the free-kick himself. The man from Malaga ignores his team-mates in the box, shoots, and shoots well over.

27'   Lega are on top at the moment. Amrabat's cross finds Eraso at the far post. He brings the ball down on his chest and lashes it across the face of goal, where Ramos is waiting to clear.

25'   Gabriel peels in to space in the box and meets Tito's outswinging corner. He's a good 18 yards out when he makes contact, and back-pedalling. He can't generate enough power to beat Casilla. That's a bit of a wake-up call for Madrid, who were marking very slackly.

25'   No sign of Karim Benzema, so far. He starts 2018 as he finished 2017: anonymous.

22'   Isco pirouettes out of trouble on the flank, but then puts Llorente in trouble with a hospital pass that allows Amrabat to steal in. He combines with Rico before fizzing a low cross through the six-yard box. It's a nice ball, and a shame that Beavue couldn't anticipate it.

18'   The Leganés defenders swivel their heads as Achraf's cross soars over them and out the other side of the box. His delivery needs improvement.

15'   Darko Brasanac receives the ball on the half-turn, takes a few strides forward, and fizzes a shot that Casilla gets down well to meet. The 'keeper clears his ranks, but the visitors come back again. Diego Rico gallops down the left and overhits a cross to the far post.

14'   Madrid have a succession of corners. Leganés deal with each one and, finally, at the third time of asking, clear properly.

13'   Theo has made a lively start on the left. He already looks more adventurous than in previous matches.

11'   Eraso chips a ball over the top to Beauvue. The Madrid defence are stepping up, but fail to lure him in to the offside trap. A good touch will allow Beauvue to shoot from inside the box. The touch is shoddy and the move breaks down.

9'   A loose header from Nacho almost allows Amrabat to slip in on goal. Sergio Ramos shows no signs of rustiness as he cruises across to cover.

6'   A replay of that free-kick reveals that the players in the wall were culpable. They split and the ball sliced straight through the gap.

5'   Beauvue hits the post! The Guadeloupe international fizzes the ball over the wall towards the near corner. With Casilla scrambling, it thuds off the bottom of the upright and behind for a goal kick.

5'   Leganés have a free-kick in a dangerous position after a foul by Kovacic. Beauvue stands over it, and from this position on the corner of the pitch he can either cross or shoot.

3'   Theo Hernández scuffs a cross behind Isco, who still manages to take it down with his chest. Surrounded by three green-shirted players, he can't get a shot away.

2'   Achraf has an opening saunter down the right flank. Diego Rico gets a light deflection on his cross and it bobbles in to the arms of Champagne.

1' Isco strokes the ball back to Marcos Llorente to get this show on the road.

Sergio Ramos is cutting a curious figure in the tunnel. The returning captain is sporting a goatee and a red plastic cup. Frat party at the Bernabéu?

The teams are gathering in the tunnel at the Bernabéu.

Watford loanee Nordin Amrabat livened up Leganés when he came on as a substitute in the first leg at Butarque, and has been rewarded with a spot in the starting XI. Lega will be a threat on the counter-attack with the trio of Amrabat, El Zhar, and Beauvue.

Real Madrid have not made any signings this month, but the rumours are beginning to circulate. The latest link is with Argentine striker Lautaro Martínez, who is also a target for Atlético. "I found out today," said Martínez of the interest.

The Leganés players are trotting on to the Bernabéu turf to start their warm-up.

Tonight's other quarter-final - Alavés vs Valencia - is going to extra time after a 2-1 home win levelled up the tie at 3-3 on aggregate.

Leganés will make history tonight regardless of whether they win... Jara Cuenca will become the first ever kitwoman in the top flight.
