The final week of the winter transfer window usually means trading accelerates for most of the teams involved in the relegation battle - such as Las Palmas, but no one could have imagined that an offer from China would land on the doorstep at the Canary Islands-based club for Jonathan Viera.

Interest from England for Viera

Several English clubs attempted to take the 28-year-old to the Premier League last summer - all were categorically told to stump up Viera's buy-out fee, 30 million euros, or forget about trying to sign the player.

But the islanders were taken aback when Viera's agent, Iván Cristovinho informed club officials that a 20 million euro offer had come for the player from a Chinese club. The said club's Technical Secretary was even planning to travel to the Canarys to hold a meeting with Las Palmas to push the deal through but was told that Viera is not for sale unless the buy-out is met in full. Despite their precarious position in the table (the team are second from bottom), the club decided to turn down a significant economic proposal for their star player.
