Atlético Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano has been nominated for the best stadium in the world 2017 award. There are 27 candidates, amongst them are the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, the U-Arena in Paria, Orlando City Stadium and Nemesio Díez Stadium in Toluca. The rojiblanco stadium is considered one of the favourites to win the award previously won by Istanbul Vodafone Park in 2016.
The Jury Prize will be selected by a panel of stadium expert architects, each one from a different country and company. The jurors have designed more than a dozen of the best modern stadiums around the world.
The jury will announce a list of 10 finalists on the 26th of February. The winner will then be announced on March 7th, which is subject to change if the decision to crown a winner takes longer than expected.
Voting for best stadium in the world
Also, their is a Public Award, which is left in the hands of the voting public. The platform is constructed to allow one vote per person on a mobile, tablet or desktop computer. The voting will remain open until March 4th.
In order to vote, the person must select five stadiums and then rate them from five to one and the stadium with the best support will receive the award for best stadium in the world of 2017.
The stadium of the year award is a non-commercial event which was launched eight years ago by Stadiony.net and StadiumDB.com - two websites that specialise in football stadiums. It has become internationally recognised and was created to pay homage to the best stadium design around the world.
The Wanda Metropolitano is one of the most modern stadiums in the world and has a cable roof structure that is immensly impressive designed by Cruz and Ortiz architects. One thing that stands in Atlético's favour is the size of their fanbase with the vote going public. So far, over 38,000 from 100 countries have already cast their vote.
