Barcelona 6-1 Girona, LaLiga Santander: goals, action, report

They may not command a catchy acronym, but Barcelona's attacking quartet of Suárez, Messi, Coutinho, and Dembélé gave an ominous indication of their potential as Ernesto Valverde's side swatted Girona aside at Camp Nou.

The crowd were still settling in their seats and opening their packets of pipas when Portu opened  the scoring for Girona, capitalising on a lapse of concentration by Samuel Umtiti. Unfortunately for Pablo Machín's side, that served only to rile the hosts.

Messi was mesmeric on a night when he became the leading provider of assists in LaLiga history. And two minutes after the opening goal, Suárez was the beneficiary of his unerring distribution. Messi himself scored the second and third goals, before scything through the Girona midfield and feeding Coutinho, who in turn laid the ball across goal for Suárez to score his second.

Coutinho made it five with a curling shot that nestled in the net via the far post, and Suárez secured the match ball after fine work from Dembélé on the right.

Barcelona 6-1 Girona: as it happened

90'+3' FT.

90'+3'   Luis Suárez is desperately looking for a yellow card, which would mean he'll miss the next match against Las Palmas, but have a clean slate for the following game against Atlético. The ref knows what he's up to, and keeps his cards in his pocket.

90'+1'   Aleix García catches the ball superbly on the edge of the box, forcing ter Stegen to tip it over. Bernardo rises highest at the corner and coaxes the Germany 'keeper in to another excellent block on his line.

89'   The pace of the match has slowed to a snail pace. Barça know they've won, Girona know they've lost.

87' Jordi Alba is booked for a rugby tackle on Maffeo.

85'   Carles Planas enters a foot-race with Semedo, until the latter pulls up with an injury. He'd been hobbling around for a few minutes prior to that, and won't be able to continue. Sergi Roberto drops to full-back in his absence.

83'   Girona's wing-backs continue to maraude forward at every opportunity. You can't fault their enthusiasm.

82'   Messi almost finds Jordi Alba's run inside the box, but a vital touch from Bernardo sends the ball behind. From the corner, Vermaelen leaps highest at the far post and heads the ball back over the 'keeper. A combination of fingertip and crossbar prevents Barça scoring a seventh.

77' A final change for Barça: Rakitic goes off and Sergi Roberto, with the ink still wet on his new contract, comes on.

76' GOOOOOL! A hat-trick for Suárez! Rakitic cuts a pass through the Girona defence to Dembélé, who has the accleration to scoot away from Juanpe and put the ball on a silver platter for his Uruguayan team-mate.

75'   Pere Pons intercepts Alba's cross, but plays it straight to Suárez, who sees his shot deflected behind for a corner. Girona clear but Barça maintain possession.

73'   Three Barcelona players bear down on goal, until the linesman raises his flag. Dembélé had strayed offside when he received the ball from Messi.

71' Portu comes off, and Douglas comes on for Girona.

69' Paulinho replaces Busquets before the free-kick is taken.

68'   Barcelona survive a goal-mouth scramble in their own box and go straight up the other end, where Bernardo fould Messi on the edge of the box. The man himself - on a hat-trick - stands over the ball.

66' GOOOOOOOOOL! Coutinho twists, turns, finds a smidgeon of space, and lashes a gorgeous shot in off the post.

64' Valverde also makes a change, and it's the one that he should have made ten minutes ago: Piqué off, Vermaelen on.

63' A second swap for Girona. Borja García goes off, and Manchester City-loanee Aleix García comes on.

62' This time, it is a foul. Juanpe clatters Dembélé and enters the book.

61'   Juanpe sends Dembélé tumbling with a hefty tackle on the edge of the box. Replays reveal the defender got a touch on the ball. Good challenge.

59'   Coutinho collects the ball off Rakitic and fizzes a shot towards goal. The ball squirms around in the 'keeper's arms, but he eventually gets it under control.

58'   Dembélé comes very close to finding the bottom corner. It goes without saying that Messi provided the pass for the France winger, who cuts back on himself wrong-footing Juanpe, before rolling the ball just the wrong side of the post.

56'   Ernesto Valverde needs to get Piqué off. He's about as agile as the Titanic on tranquilizers in his current state.

54'   Suárez hits the post! Dembélé lays the ball out to him on the left, and he has time to run around the ball and curl it back towards the far post. A fine effort, but it smacks the base of the upright.

53' Why is Piqué still on the pitch? He can't run and the game is won.

52'   Piqué hobbles very gingerly to the touchline, where he stands on his haunches. The No.3 limps back on, but looks very uncomfortable as Lozano steals a yard on him and flashes a shot in to the side netting.

51'   Piqué is holding his knee - which is heavily strapped up - after a clash with Pere Pons. Piqué is wincing. Vermaelen is warming up.

49'   Barcelona are applying the pressure at the start of the second half. They're yet to carve out a clear chance, though. And, hang on, here come Girona! Portu gallops up the wing and tries to centre the ball for Lozano. Ter Stegen sees the situation develop and positions himself well to intercept the pass.

46' We're off! 45 more minutes of that football lark beckon.

Pablo Machín has made a change at half time. Aday has made way for Carles Planas.

The teams are back out on the Camp Nou pitch.

Lionel Messi has been utterly mesmeric in that half. He assisted for the opener, scored goals two and three, and set up the fourth.

45' HT.

44' GOOOOOOL! Barcelona have a fourth, Luis Suárez has a second. Messi scythes through the centre of the pitch, eating up the yards. He slides the ball to Coutinho who, with a first-time pass, commits the 'keeper and opens the goal up for Suárez to slot it in.

40'   Maffeo winds up to shoot on the volley at the far post, until Jordi Alba scurries back to glance the ball to head the ball behind for a corner. Ter Stegen punches the ball out to Granell, who curls a decent effort just wide. It would have been a scorcher.

39'   Anthony Lozano forces a save from ter Stegen with a downward header that was on its way to the bottom corner.

37' GOOOOOOOOOL! Messi pre-empts the jump of the wall, hits a daisy-cutter underneath Girona studs. Bono, who saw it very late, can only watch as it settles in the bottom corner.

36'   Suárez is pole-axed on the edge of the box, and Messi stands over the dead ball as Camp Nou claps.

35'   Just remembered that Coutinho is on the pitch. With Messi drifting all over the place, the Brazilian appears to be having difficulty finding a way in to the game.

32'   A smart pass from Portu - aiming for Lozano - forces ter Stegen off his line and to the ground. Alert goalkeeping.

30' GOOOOOOOOL! Messi puts Barça ahead! The Girona defenders look to the sky in disbelief. They thought they had sent him down a blind alley. Once again, the move starts with a superb run from Suárez, who springs the trap and cushions the ball for Messi. He can't find space at the near post, so dances around several bodies to the penalty spot, and from there he tucks the ball in the corner.

28'   A rare lapse in technique for Mr Messi. He receives the ball on the edge of the box, leans back as he shapes to shoot, and leathers the ball in to the crowd.

26'   Suárez springs the offside trap and stings the palms of Bono with a fierce shot from a narrow angle. The Girona 'keeper parries it straight back to Suárez, who can't find a team-mate with his first-time cross.

23'   Better from Dembélé. He chops on to his left foot, cuts on to his right, and fizzes a cross right through the corridor of uncertainty. Suárez is busting a gut to reach it, but he can't fight his way through the crowd to get there.

21'   It's not easy to kick a ball straight out of Camp Nou, but Dembélé has a good go with a wild shot from 30 yards.

20'   Bernardo heads the ball off the line! Messi latches on to Suárez's chip and scoops the ball over Bono. It is on course for the back of the net, until Girona's No.2 nods it over the bar and ends up in the net himself.

18'   The Girona defence trot forward as Semedo's foul on Lozano gives Borja the chance to swing in a cross. The referee immediately penalises Ramalho for over-enthusiastic grappling with Suárez, and the Girona defence trot back.

17'   Both teams have settled down after that frenetic start. Girona's main issue is the space they are gifting Lionel Messi. He is picking passes left, right, and centre.

13'   Alba tries to cushion Messi's pass along the six-yard line with a touch off his chest. Suárez is the intended recipient, but Bono sees it coming and dives between them to claim the knock-down.

12'   Messi is in resplendant, string-pulling form. He threads a magnificent pass through to Dembélé, who takes one touch too many in the box and loses the ball. The young winger looks a touch rusty, which is understandable given his stop-start season.

11'   Messi whistles the set piece towards the far post. It's going just wide, but Bono turns it around the post just to be safe. Girona clear the subsequent corner.

10'   Messi takes a slightly heavy touch mid-way through a weaving run towards the box. But he recovers in time to get a touch, and is then upended by Ramalho. The Argentine halls himself up and stands over the free-kick, 25 yards out.

That was Messi's 12th assist of the season, and his 148th in LaLiga. That's more than any other player in Liga history.

7'   Lozano lets the ball bounce alongside him in the box, before flashing a wild shot over the bar. And breathe...

5' GOL GOL GOL! Barça are level two minutes later through Luis Suárez! Messi floats in to a pocket of space in the 'No.10 region' to receive the ball. Meanwhile, Suárez is bending his run intelligently on the left flank. Messi plays him in, and the Uruguayan slides it past the 'keeper.

3' GOOOOOOOOOOOL! Girona lead! Portu the scorer! Anthony Lozano - who was a Barça player until last month - carries Girona forward with a lung-busting run. It looks like Umtiti is about to swoop in to clear the danger, but he doesn't notice Portu ghosting in behind him. The No.9 steals the ball and strokes it in via both posts.

1'   It only takes Nelson Semedo 20 seconds to find space on the right flank and gallop forward. He cuts the ball back towards the edge of the box, where a Girona player scuffs it clear. Barça continue in possession.

1' Peeep! Barça get proceedings underway and settle in to a spell of possession.

The two sides are honouring a minute of silence in memory of the police officer who died in Bilbao on Thursday evening amid fighting between Athletic Club and Spartak Moscow supporters.

A big 'Freedom - Llibertat' tifo hangs between the first and second tiers at Camp Nou.

And out they come! Piqué touches the Rakuten-emblazoned archway as if it's the 'This is Anfield' sign. Admirable commitment to Japanese consumer electronics there, from the big man.

The teams are taking their places in the Camp Nou tunnel.

A reminder of the teams, with kick-off five minutes away...

Real Madrid thrashed Alavés at the Bernabéu earlier this afternoon (full details of that match are here), meaning this is how the top end of the LaLiga table looks ahead of kick-off. Girona are sitting pretty in ninth place.

The fans are congregating outside Camp Nou for a match that Girona's official Twitter account has described as 'historic'.
