According to sources close to the player, Neymar has decided to undergo an operation to fix the fracture to his fifth metatarsal. Emery has denied the player has made up his mind.

Paris are anxiously awaiting the official word on Neymar Júnior's injury, with the crucial Champions League return leg against Real Madrid just seven days away. Trailing the tie 3-1 from the first leg in MadridPSG will need all of their heavy artillery firing on all cylinders if they are to turn the tables on Madrid and they would have been relying on Neymar, who picked up an injury in the team's last league game against Olympique de Marseille.

Diario AS understands from sources close to the player, that Neymar will be unavailable for the return leg as he has opted to undergo surgery and will be out of action for two months. Surgeons will insert a metal plate to weld together his factured metatarsal to ensure that he will be back fully fit in time for this summer's World Cup finals in Russia. The only doubt in the player's mind is whether to have the operation in Brazil or France.

PSG coach Emery however has denied the reports and said there is still a small chance the player could be fit for the Real Madrid Champions League return leg.

Not worth risking missing the World Cup

Neymar decided that it was not worth risking missing the World Cup and that influenced his decision to go under the knife. Considering the gravity of the injury, Neymar thinks the best option is to stop and make sure his foot heals completely rather than continue playing with pain-killing injections. However, he will not be available for Brazil’s pre-World Cup friendlies against Russia and Germany at the end of March. If he returns in May, he will have until 17 June, when Brazil play their opening game against Sweden, to get himself back match fit.

Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar travelled to Paris on Tuesday in order to assess Neymar and meet with the PSG medical department to determine an appropriate treatment programme.

Serious injury

Paris Saint-Germain issued a medical report on Neymar's injury last night, explaining that the Brazilian forward had suffered "a sprain to the anterior external ligament in his right ankle, associated with a fissure to the fifth metatarsal". In reports this morning, Brazilian media already started to speculate that Neymar would undergo an operation: "PSG's medical staff examined Neymar's injured right foot and made their diagnosis while it was still inflamed; now they mut wait a few days until the inflammation subsides, but surgery has not been ruled out", former player and sports commentator Caio Ribeiro explained.

Surgery is the best option, conclude the experts

Former Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo said: “If he does have a fracture, I’m pretty sure that he will require a trip to the operating theatre”. Roger Flores, commentator on Brazilian programme Bem, Amigos added, “People tend to worry whenever there is talk of operations but when someone has a fracture or fissure, surgery actually speeds up the recovery process in contrast to other treatments, such as keeping the leg immobile, which is a much slower healing process".
