Dalian Yifang were thrashed 8-0 by Shanghai SIPG on the opening weekend of the Chinese Super League with new signings Yannick Carrasco and Nicolás Gaitán both completing 90 minutes of a debut to forget.
Shanghai SIPG are one of the strongest sides in the CSL, runners-up in two of the last three seasons and AFC Champions League finalists last year. Dalian, who were promoted back to the top flight in 2017, invested heavily in Gaitán and Carrasco, who cost almost 50 million euros combined, but the former Atlético Madrid wingers were unable to prevent SIPG from filling their boots in the Shanghai Stadium.
José Fonte unable to prevent SIPG rout
Oscar bagged a hat-trick and his Brazil teammate Hulk scored from the spot as SIPG rattled in five goals over a 24-minute spell in the second half. Dalian had also added experienced Portugal central defender José Fonte to the squad last month but were powerless to stop SIPG from running amok.
Dalian's next game is against reigning seven-times champions Guangzhou Evergrande.
