LaLiga incidents where VAR would have made a difference

LaLiga have confirmed that season 2018/19 will bring with it the introduction of VAR so we asked our resident referee to see how this season could have been affected.

With the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee confirmed for next's seasons LaLiga, AS' resident referee, Iturralde González, had a look back over this campaign to date to see where differences would likely have been made. Far from an exhaustive list, here are a selection of key decisions that VAR would have been used in.

Alavés

Result: Barcelona 2 - 1 Alavés
Incident: Luis Suarez kicks Duarte which if the referee sees it as violent conduct he would have been sent off.
VAR: would likely have informed ref of the perceived aggression and the referee would then decide.

Barcelona

Result: Valencia 1 - 1 Barça
Incident: Messi not awarded goal when ball was clearly over the line.
VAR: clear case to award goal

Result: Alavés 1 - 2 Barcelona
Incident: Wakaso takes down Messi inside the area. Penalty not given.
VAR: referee likely to be advised to review the play and decision made.

Result: Barça 4 - 0 Deportivo
Incident: Suárez shoots and the ball crosses the goal line, but Mateu Lahoz does not give the goal.
VAR: clear case to award goal

Celta Vigo

Result: Celta 2 - 3 Real Sociedad
Incident: penalty awarded in 86th minute with score 2-2 after a foul from Celta's Jonny on Carlos Vela, but the infraction actually occurred outside the area.
VAR: would have corrected decision and a free-kick outside the area given.

Result: Espanyol 2 - 1 Celta
Incident: Gerard Moreno scores from an offside position.
VAR: clarification given and goal not given.

Deportivo La Coruña

Result: Levante 2 - 2 Deportivo
Incident: The equalising goal comes from a non-existent penalty on the Levante's Ivi.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Result: Deportivo 1 - 2 Girona
Incident: Penalty given after Deportivo defender Albentosa on Kayode should not have been.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Getafe

Result: Athletic 0 - 0 Getafe
Incident: Fajr's free kick for Markel Bergara's header which was stopped by Kepa, but appeared to be inside the goal. Referee Melero López did not award the goal.
VAR: if clear from replays the goal would have been given but this is where goalline technology, not VAR, is required.

Leganés

Result: Málaga 0 - 2 Leganés
Incident: Gabriel Pires's goal for 0-1 could have been ruled off for offside in the build-up.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Levante

Result: Valencia 3 - 1 Levante
Incident: with the score at 1-1, a goal by Coke was ruled out when he had not pushed anyone, but rather Paulista on his Valencian teammate Gayà.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Málaga

Result: Girona 1 - 0 Málaga
Incident: Málaga claimed offside in the build-up to the goal, scored by Alcalá.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Result: Valencia 5 - 0 Málaga
Incident: Santi Mina's offside call on Zaza's goal play.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Result: Barça 2 - 0 Málaga
Incident: Deulofeu's headed goal in the first minute was from a Digne cross where the ball had run out of play and clearly crossed the line.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Result: Getafe 1 - 2 Real Madrid
Incident: Getafe equalised with Nacho's own goal, but Jorge Molina was in an offside position.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.

Result: Girona 2 - 1 Real Madrid
Incident: Stuani's shot was saved by Casilla and then finished off by Portu to make it 2-1 but he had been in an offside position.
VAR: would have likely corrected decision.
