Neymar Jr pays homage to the late Stephen Hawking

Following the passing of the world-renowned physicist, the Brazilian star posted an image of himself in a wheelchair along with a message of positivity for his followers.

News broke early on Wednesday that famed physicist Stephen Hawking had passed away peacefully in his sleep. As the world paid their respects to a man who defied medical predictions on his life expectancy, Neymar Jr posted an image with his own message, one taken from the Englishman's many quotes.

Neymar shares Hawking quote on positivity

The Brazilian star continues his recovery from surgery following an injury picked up while playing for his club Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1, a situation that led to the record-breaking player missing the crunch Champions League tie with Real Madrid. He chose his Twitter account to post a message in his native language alongside a photo of himself in a wheelchair.

"One has to have a positive attitude and must make the best of the situation that one finds oneself in"

This line comes from a much longer quote from Hawking:

"If you are disabled, it is probably not your fault, but it is no good blaming the world or expecting it to take pity on you. One has to have a positive attitude and must make the best of the situation that one finds oneself in; if one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically disabled as well. In my opinion, one should concentrate on activities in which one's physical disability will not present a serious handicap. I am afraid that Olympic Games for the disabled do not appeal to me, but it is easy for me to say that because I never liked athletics anyway. On the other hand, science is a very good area for disabled people because it goes on mainly in the mind."

As the photo was shared around social media, views on the appropriateness of it were mixed, with some suggesting that it was a little misguided, while others chose to be fully indignant.
