Russia 0-3 Brazil: match report

A string of second-half goals helped a Brazil side deprived of talisman Neymar to an emphatic 3-0 friendly win over World Cup hosts Russia in Moscow on Friday.

After several missed chances in the first half, Brazil's Miranda finally broke the deadlock by tapping in a rebounded shot past goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev in the 53rd minute.

Philippe Coutinho doubled Brazil's lead with a penalty kick less than 10 minutes later. The playmaker's Barcelona team mate Paulinho quickly added another in the 66th minute, expertly heading a flawless cross by Willian into the back of the net.

Russia take on France next week, while Brazil face Germany for the first time since their humiliating 7-1 loss to the European side on home soil in the 2014 World Cup semi-final.

Russia vs Brazil: international friendly, as it happened

90'+3' Game over from Luzhniki Stadium.

90'+2'   Into the second minute of three added on now. Game's been decided already and Russia, who can hardly harbour hopes of winning it, will need to reassess where they're at. Brazil, however, right on track! With Neymar to come back too, they will be hard beat once the summer rolls around.

90'   Firmino shoots with his right. Blocked. Firmino shoots with his left. Blocked.

87'   Casemiro fouls Dzagoev on the edge of the square. Might have been lucky not to get a yellow but ref keeps his cards in his pockets where they stayed all night. Free for the home side though. Dzagoev up and on his feet to take it. Wide!

86' Geromel on for Miranda.

86'   Brazil looking dangerous for a third. Fagner shoots, Fagner misses - and badly.

84' Fagner on for Dani Alves. Five changes now for Brazil.

82'   They're exhausted. Brazil back throwing the ball around like the good old days of about 60 minutes ago.

82'   Russia have punched themselves out trying to get back into this game.

80' Samedov off for Smolnikov.

79' Taison, Fred coming on! Coutinho and Willian the two chaps who are being withdrawn.

76'   Russia with a really good chance. Ball into Zhirkov and he is crowded out in the air. It's sent back towards goal with Alisson out of position. Casemiro clears off the line with his head. Back onto the chest of Zhirkov but no pace on it and Brazil clear. This all happened within three yards of the goalline!

73'   Close again from Brazil. Costa out on the left, plays it to Willian. Shot blocked. Augusto wins it back but Brazil can't do anything with it.

71' Zabolotnyi replaced Smolov.

71' Renato Augusto coming on for Brazil. Paulinho the man he replaces.

69'   And another straight after but they're little more than half chances. Kombarov the latest.

69' Russia with an effort now but that's well wide from Dzagoev.

66'   Paulinho goal! Willian with a lovely run into the box down the right and he chips it into the area ever so delicately. Paulinho nods home.

65' Here's Fimino. Coming on for Gabriel Jesus.

62' Anton Miranchuk on now for Russia. He replaces Glushakov.

61' Paulinho steps up and sends Akinfeev the wrong way. Buries it! 2-0. Deserved.

61'   There was absolutely no doubt. Golovin the man who grabs Paulinho's arm back and it is as clear as day.

61'   Paulinho wins a penalty!

60'   How did he miss? Coutinho goes out right, and keeps going, before eventually getting a shot away. It is deflected towards Paulinho and he misses! How did he miss? He was a yard out with an open goal gaping in front of him. It did come at him fast and he was arriving at speed but still just ease it into the net!

59'   Headed away by Casemiro. The man is a beast as defending set-pieces.

58'   They win a corner with their latest charge forward!

57'   Brazil sitting back now. they're just trying to catch their breath after the effort the exerted to get that opener! Possibly also want to see what Russia have to offer.

55'   Russia make a change. Miranchuk off and Dzagoev off.

52'   Corner is headed down by Silva and saved by Akinfeev but Miranda on hand to drive it to the roof of the net! Brazil take a deserved lead.

51'   Russia break and lose it. Willian strikes, it hits a defender and Akinfeev with a save off his head. He didn't know anything about it though. Brazil starting to turn up the heat in a chilly Moscow.

50'   Alves the latest to test Akinfeev. Tame effort as he parries to to himself.

49'   Douglas Costa another run down the line. Crosses. It's half cleared and Casemiro strikes it as it falls to him. Wrong option, or at least wrong technique! It goes a country mile wide.

48'   That's the chance of the game. Costa across to Willian, who puts it on a plate for Paulinho. He sidefoots it towards Akinfeev, who makes a decent save. Coutinho follow-up is awakward and over. It didn't fall to him kindly at all.

47'   Dougles Costa chases down a pass deep in Russia territory. He makes it in record time but his cut back is to nobody. Well, not nobody, there's a Russian player waiting for it.

46'   Second half is go for launch!

Agree on the need for Firmino. Gabriel Jesus been a hologram, really. That ankle injury might have rattled him and knocked him off stride.

Some good tactical anlysis on the game here.

45'+1'   And that's it! It's half-time at the Luzhniki Stadium.

45'+1'   Into the one minute of injury time and we look to be finishing the half as we started - with Brazil in possession. Fairly tame possession too, which might be harsh, but they haven't scored yet despite their dominance.

45'   Willian with a cross. It's a floater and Paulinho heads it back towards goal. He can't use the momentum of the ball to get enough power on it and it bounces right in front of Akinfeev, and he accepts the gifts with open arms.

43'   Lovely stepover by Paulinho and it rolls to Jesus. He plays a pass to Paulinho, who has spinned and continued his run. Kudryashov slides in and puts it out for a corner.

42'   Russia are very physical. Marcelo looked to be fouled and then Casemiro thrown on the ground as Russia win it back. Offside in the end but once they manage to engage Brazilian defenders, they're winning in the physical stakes.

40'   What a ball over the top to Willian. He doesn't expect it to fall to him and he hits it with the side of his foot. Akinfeev gladly accepts.

37'   CHANCE! Miranchuk with a point blank effort. Smolov pulls it back to him and he hits it over. Has to challenge the keeper from there but he can't. He has a look back to see if the ball bobbled up to him. Sorry, lad, that's on you!

36'   Russia growing in confidence. Zobnin has a strike now after a nice move. It could hardly have fallen nicer to him! Corkscrews it and that skids wide.

35'   Douglas Costa hits the side netting. He does a stepover and gets it onto his right before driving one low but wide.

34'   Willian the latest to try a cross. Can't beat the first defender.

32'   Alves picked off and Russia break. Golovin plays it to Smolov and he plays across to Samedov. Saves by Alisson for a corner.

31'   Willian handles the ball as he tries to bring it under control.

28'   Loads of efforts from distance. Brazil well on top but lack of proper chance creation from them too.

28'   Russia with their first effort on goal. Golovin strikes from outside the box and Alisson gets his body behind it. Easy for the Roma stopper.

27'   Paulinho drives forward and gets hauled down but not before he can pass it to Willian out wide. Willian strikes from the right and Akinfeev with another save.

24'   Coutinho now with a similar sort of shot but it does trouble the goulkeeper. Barely though. Akinfeev jumps up to save the curling effort.

24'   Willian cuts inside after a Paulinho to Coutinho combo. He strikes but it's blocked. That's when he is most dangerous.

22'   Ball goes out and Alisson looks for a ball. A good 15 seconds wasted before play restarts. He calls for a ball about six times. Early on for time-wasting.

20'   Russia win it back and a long ball across the field to Kombarov is way too heavy.

18'   Brazil playing some lovely passing moves. No real attacking threat so far but so far, so good around the middle. Latest ends up with a Marcelo cross and that's high and wide.

16'   Dani Alves fouled now. Golovin the man who felled him. Coutinho ready to swing it in. He does and Casemiro gets a head on it. Akinfeev saves easily.

16'   Glushakov fouls Marcelo now. Nasty enough one too. Massively unnecessary too.

14'   Gabriel Jesus looks to be okay. He plays on. Brazil back in possession.

12'   Gabriel Jesus down injured. Doesn't look good for the strik.er

10'   It's whipped right in around the defence and Gabriel Jesus heads it out for a corner.

9'   They win a free from the goalkick. Casemiro goes through the back of Miranchuk as a shortcut for the ball!

8'   Dani Alves strikes after receiving the ball from Paulinho. Paulinho passed up the chance to shoot. Alves didn't. Miles over the bar. Russia with a chance to get the ball for a second at least.

8'   Russia have offered nothing so far. Nervous on the ball and quite jumpy off it too.

6'   Alves sets Willian through now but he hits it too hard. Alves still an attacking force!

5'   Dani Alves with a ball over the top to Gabriel Jesus. He takes it down as Russia seems to stop waiting for a flag. It never comes. Gabriel Jesus turns and strikes at Akinfeev's feet.

4'   Willian down the right but he can't get space to get a cross in. Brazil recycle the ball and keep possession.

3'   Coutinho on the left, Casemiro as the defensive midfielder and Paulinho just ahead of him slightly to the right in midfield.

2'   Brazil give the ball away, Dani Alves the culprit, and it goes straight to Smolov.

1'   Brazil, wearing blue, tip off! We had the lights, cameras and now we have action.

The anthems all done and photos with the two captains, both keepers - Akinfeev and Alisson. We are ready for action!

The Luzhniki Stadium is scheduled to host the final of the World Cup. Brazil eyeing up a return here soon!

Teams emerge onto the field.

Russia have played just friendlies with automatic qualification as the hosts. Four draws, two losses and two wins in eight games in 2017! Two 3-3 draws against Belgium and Spain amongst those results.

Coutinho starts, as does Casemiro, Paulinho and Willian in what is a very, very good midfield. Douglas Costa delivering the ball into Gabriel Jesus not bad up front either for Brazil. Let's see how they're shaping up as one of the favourites for the World Cup and how they play without Neymar.

Brazil XI: Alisson (C); Alves, Silva, Miranda, Marcelo; Paulinho, Casemiro, Coutinho; Willian, Jesus, Douglas Costa.

Russia starting XI: Akinfeev; Samedov; Kutepov, Granat, Kudryashov, Kombarov; Glushakov, Zobnin; Golovin, Al Miranchuk; Smolov.

Today's match will be played at the new look Luzhniki Stadium, which has been done up for the World Cup - and will host the final.

Russia vs Brazil: international friendly match preview

A Neymar-less Brazil take on World Cup hosts Russia in an international friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, today at 17:00 CET. The Paris Saint-Germain star's absence with a foot injury is likely to reduce the turnout in the Russian capital, although around 60,000 are still expected to be watching on from the stands.

Concerns over state of pitch at Luzhniki Stadium

Meanwhile, there are concerns over the state of the pitch in the wake of recent snowfall and freezing temperatures in Moscow - a state of affairs that could also have a damaging effect on the spectacle on offer. "We have to focus on our opponents, not on the playing surface and the climate," cautioned Brazil head coach Tite ahead of the clash, however.

The visitors were dealt a late blow by the training-ground injury suffered by Juventus left-back Alex Sandro, who has been replaced in the Seleçao squad by Shakhtar Donetsk's Ismaily. In addition to Neymar and Sandro, the Brazilians have also seen Atlético Madrid's Filipe Luis pull out of the squad due to injury.

Russia have also had an eventful build-up to the clash, with a surprise 6:30am doping test on Wednesday morning affecting the preparations of coach Stanislac Cherchesov, who has added Rubin Kazan defender Ruslan Kambolov to a squad that features four players - including Alan Dzagoev and Yuri Zhirkov - who are struggling with niggles.

Russia yet to beat Brazil...

Today's friendly will be the 13th meeting of the two sides, with the previous 12 yielding eight wins for Brazil and four draws.
