In a match between two of the most attacking teams in Europe, only one of those attacks clicked in to gear. Liverpool stunned Manchester City with three goals in the first half of their Champions League quarter-final.
Mohamed Salah opened the scoring after 12 minutes. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain added another after 21 minutes, and Sadio Mane nodded Anfield in to delirious disbelief ten minutes later.
City controlled the second half but failed to convert that domination in to chances. Liverpool's defence, often doubted this season, dealt with everything. Trent Alexander-Arnold was particularly assured up against Leroy Sane, the stand-out player for the visitors.
Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City: as it happened
90'+3' Sterling booked for chopping down Wijnaldum in a counter-attack-avoidance measure.
90'+2' Sane drives inside and plays a one-two with De Bruyne. The return ball is too heavy and runs through Karius, who dribbles to the corner of the box before diving on the ball.
90' Three added minutes.
90' Karius plucks Walker's cross from the air and is greeted by a growl of delight from the Kop.
89' A lot of City pressure, not much penetration.
87' Moreno is on for Oxlade-Chamberlain.
86' Henderson is booked for a cynical foul on Sterling and will miss the return leg. Sterling reacts angrily and tries to square up to Henderson. He bounces off.
84' GOOOOO... No! Jesus taps in at the far post, but Sane was adjudged offside in the build-up. Replays suggest he was level.
83' De Bruyne's cross goes all the way through to Silva on the edge of the six-yard box. He sees it late and Karius flops on the ball.
82' Fernandinho has taken to shooting from 35 yards. City yet to create a clear-cut chance.
80' De Bruyne is the next man in the book, his crime a shoulder barge that sends Mane spinning through the air.
79' Solanke lets a three-on-three go to waste as he passes acquiescently to Laporte's feet.
76' Jesus shoves Milner to the ground and reacts furiously when he hears the whistle blow. So furiously that the referee whips out a yellow.
75' Raheem Sterling does a quick give-and-go with Walker before steaming down the wing and crossing for Jesus. His delivery is slightly behind the Brazilian, whose acrobatic effort drops wide of the post.
72' Kyle Walker makes up for his error in the build-up to the opening goal by stretching his leg to prevent Mane tapping the ball in at the near post. The ball skews in to Ederson's arms and he launches City forward on the counter.
71' Roberto Firmino winces when he sees his number appear on the fourth official's board. Dom Solanke takes his place in attack.
68' Silva swivels in the box, looking for Jesus, and forces a corner off the shins of Lovren. Otamendi meets it... and the ball flops on to the roof of the net.
65' Alexander-Arnold is responding well to bombardment down his flank. City are trying to isolate him against Sane as much as possible.
63' Fernandinho commits a clumsy foul on Mane inside the centre cirle, giving Liverpool a chance to relieve the incessant pressure.
62' The Kop jeers in delight as Raheem Sterling is signalled offside from Fernandinho's pass.
59' Sane is cucooned by four Liverpool defenders, and yet somehow manages to continue his surge in to the box and stab the ball towards Jesus, who can't get there before Karius.
58' The next half hour will be a stiff test for Liverpool. Can they defend under sustained pressure?
57' Guardiola makes the change that many expected at half time. Raheem Sterling comes on for Gundogan.
55' Alexander-Arnold drops in beside his centre-half to lash a cross behind for a corner. Silva was lurking behind him. Liverpool clear at the second time of asking, but only as far as Fernandinho, who recycles play.
54' City are showing signs of warming up. Silva and Sane exchange a one-two, and the German lashes a shot in to the side netting. A goal in the next few minutes and things become interesting...
53' That will be that for Salah. He hobbles down the tunnel. Wijnaldum takes his place.
52' Excellent from Fernandinho. He watches Robertson's defensive drop out of the sky 25 yards out. Instead of shooting, he chips a delicate pass through to Sane, who lashes a shot wide.
51' Salah limps off for treatment on the touchline. He's holding his groin.
50' City pass the ball around patiently until with a swift flurry of passes, they set Sane free on the left. He wins a corner off Alexander-Arnold, which Otamendi sends over the bar.
47' No discernable tactical switch from City, surprisingly. De Bruyne a bit deeper, perhaps, but nothing radical.
46' Gabriel Jesus starts the second half. That's his seventh pass of the match. Four have been from kick offs.
Out come City! And now Liverpool... Big, big 45 minutes.
There's slightly less to write home about from in the other quarter-final this evening, where Barcelona lead Roma courtesy of an own goal from Daniele De Rossi.
45'+3' Van Dijk... Just wide! He meets Salah's whipped cross and sends it just wide of the far post.
45'+2' Otamendi is the first player in to the book for a scything tackle from behind on Firmino.
45'+1' The ball drops to Otamendi, 30 yards out. He catches it nicely and sends Karius scrambling across his line, but it's the wrong side of the post.
44' James Milner clips De Bruyne 35 yards out before offering a hand back up. De Bruyne delivers the ball towards Kompany at the far post but it fizzes straight out for a goal kick.
41' Firmino is eager for a slice of the action. He drifts inside and lashes a shot in to the Kop.
40' Fernandinho cuts out Mane's cut-back, which was bound for the back of the net, via Firmino.
38' A well-timed tackle from Laporte prevents Oxlade-Chamberlain bombing in to the box. Ox in the box, or something.
37' Raheem Sterling on at half time? This system certainly isn't working at the moment.
36' The linesman appears to feel a bit sorry for City. He watches Alexander-Arnold force Laporte in to knocking the ball behind... and signals for a goal kick.
35' City try to feel their way back in to the game, but De Bruyne misplaces a simple pass and set Andrew Robertson free on the left. He eats up the yards and is set to pull the trigger, when Fernandinho gets back with a crucial slide tackle.
33' Scarves are whirling above the heads of home supporters. They've caught somewhere between jubilation and utter surprise.
31' GOOOOOOL! Another one! Mane! Salah's first cross from the right is blocked. He gets the ball back and tries again. At the second time of asking, the ball arcs over the defence and on to the head of Sadio Mane, who bundles it in at the far post.
28' City look very, very uncomfortable. Liverpool's press has successfully ruffled their feathers. We haven't seen any of the usual passing patterns.
27' Kyle Walker has another 'moment' inside the six-yard box. He headers the ball straight in to the ground. Luckily for him, it's just beyond Mane's reach.
24' Mane bends a pass through to Salah with the outside of his boot. Ederson dashes out of his box to lump it clear.
23' De Bruyne scoops the ball over the defence, having spotted a darting run by Gundogan. Good idea, good execution, but Karius is quick off his line and plucks the ball from the air.
21' GOOOOOOOOOOL! Oxlade-Chamberlain! The ball ricochets in to his path and he kills it dead before striding forward and arrowing it in to the top corner from 25 yards. Stunning goal.
15' Henderson lumbers in to Gundogan on the edge of the box. It should have been a foul, but the referee waves his hands to signal that the show goes on.
14' Leroy Sane leads the City charge forward, with De Bruyne busting a gut to overlap on the left. Sane is not an easy man to keep pace with. Sane uses his team-mate as a decoy and shoots towards the bottom corner. He drags it slightly, and Karius watches it wide.
12' GOOOOOOOOOOL! Salah! James Milner sets Salah free with a quick pass down the wing, and he in turn slides the ball through to Firmino. The Brazilian's shot is parried by Ederson, Kyle Walker fails to deal with the rebound, and Salah nips in to lash the ball in to the roof of the net.
10' Oxlade-Chamberlain stretches his legs for the first time. He thunders down the right and holds off Laporte before swinging a cross to the far post. Kompany sends it clear with a hefty header.
7' Laporte is sticking to Mo Salah like a rash. It's a tricky assignment for the January arrival from Athletic Club. If he misses the initial tackle, Salah will be away.
5' City are easing in to possession at Anfield. A grapple between Salah and Laporte illicits a short, sharp roar from the crowd, but City keep hold of it and Sane dances to the touchline. Karius turns his shot behind for a corner, which he then gathers.
4' It looks like City have lined up with three centre-halves: Laporte, Kompany, Otamendi. Sane and Walker are the wing-backs.
2' City surge forward through Kevin De Bruyne. There's a lucky bounce that sends the ball in to his path and he lays the ball out to Sané. Alexander-Arnold, the local lad, sweeps up the danger.
1' Liverpool kick off. The crowd roars. Here we go!
Felix Bryche from Germany is the man in the middle this evening. He oversees the coin toss and associated pleasantries. We'll be underway soon.
The teams are gathering in the tunnel, below the 'This is Anfield' sign. And here they come, led by Jordan Henderson and Vincent Kompany.
That's his profile picture taken care of for the foreseeable future.
Liverpool have released a statement regarding damage caused to the Manchester City bus: "The club condemns in the strongest possible terms the scenes which preceded our Champions League quarter-final, which resulted in damage being inflicted on the Manchester City team bus during their arrival at Anfield."
The man adorning their scarves will be key this evening. Mo Salah has scored six goals in eight Champions League appearances this campaign. Across all competitions the Egypt winger has 37 in 42, which is all the more remarkable given that he arrived from Roma without a strong goal-scoring reputation.
Here come the cavalry...
The Manchester City bus emerges from a cloud of smoke at Anfield.
For Liverpool, James Milner is in the side ahead of Wijnaldum. The Yorkshireman, fresh from opening up a predictably amusing Twitter account, played well in the Premier League victory at Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Raheem Sterling is on the bench against his former club, meaning City's team is awash with ball-playing midfielders. De Bruyne, Gundogan, Silva, and Fernandinho are all in there.
Good evening! So, Liverpool vs Manchester City. An all-English Champions League tie. Two teams that know how to entertain. It's all rather mouthwatering, and we'll be here to paint pictures with words throughout the evening.
