He finally managed it ! Cristiano has been looking to bag a spectacular over-head kick for some time and finally pulled it off in the quarter final of the Champions League. The goal also came in one of European football's most difficult stadia to score and against top class opponents in the form of current Serie A champions Juventus. Gigi Buffon was on the receiving and it was becoming to see the home fans applaud Cristiano's effort despite the goal doing little to keep their options alive in the competition. The execution was superlative as the Portuguese acrobatically leapt over two meters to catch the ball perfectly as it whistled by the Juve keeper into the net. A goal that will go down in history.
Cristiano is public enemy No. 1 for all rivals in the Champions League having scored 119 goals in the competition with 14 coming this season alone. Before his acrobatic effort the Madeira born striker opened the scoring for the visitors with his third minute goal creating early problems for the Serie A side. Marcelo rounded off a perfect night with Zidane's men previously also hitting the crossbar on two occasions. To be honest, with the 0-3 scoreline its maybe no bad thing that Ramos picked up his suspension when he did. With the result at 0-1 when he was awarded the yellow, it seemed to be a major setback for the current champions but the defender will now be available for the semi.
Despite all this, I thought Madrid offered an average display. they opened the scoring early and were under pressure for over an hour from Juve. Cristiano's overhead effort, quickly followed by Dybala's red card quickly turned the dynamic of the game and Marcelo's third goal of the night should ensure a comfortable second leg at the Bernabeu and a semi-final sport for Madrid in the 17/18 competition now something of a formality. It was a shame to see Sevilla slip-up at home to Bayern with two fortuitous goals for the Bundesliga side and despite a decent performance the Andalusian side face an uphill task in Munich next week.
