After defeating Costa Rica and Iran, Tunisia climbed up nine places to the top of the African rankings.

The Tunisia national football team has moved up nine places to number 14 on this month’s Fifa World Rankings.

This is the highest position the north African country has ever reached.

The move comes after 1-0 wins over Iran and Costa Rica in friendly matches last month.

Tunisia’s ascent leaves them ahead of Mexico, Colombia and Uruguay, and just one place behind England, one of their Group G rivals at this year’s World Cup in Russia.

Africa’s highest

Tunisia currently holds the highest-ranking position among African nations, ahead of Senegal (14), DR Congo (38), Morocco (42), Egypt (46) and Nigeria (47).

This is actually the second highest position for any African nation since Ivory Coast reached the 13th spot in July 2013.

Tunisia’s gain was the continent’s biggest, matched only by Tanzania, who scaled nine spots from 146 to 137 after a surprise 2-0 victory over DR Congo on March 27.

Meanwhile, Germany and Brazil remain first and second respectively, with Belgium climbing up two spots to reach the third place of the global rankings.
