Ireland number one James Corcoran made the decisive stop in the shoot-out but was dismissed for leaving his line as the Netherlands went on to win.

As decisions go, it was a real game-changer. Ireland’s under-17s thought they had secured their place in the semi-finals of the European Championships when James Corcoran stopped Daishawn Redan’s decisive penalty during the shoot-out after a 1-1 draw but the referee had other ideas.

Apparently spotting an infringement as the kick was taken, Czech official Zbynek Proske showed Corcoran a second yellow card while Ireland were celebrating what they thought was the win. Corcoran had previously been cautioned during normal time and was sent off with Proske ordering the penalty to be retaken.

With Corcoran off the pitch, it fell to Newcastle central defender Oisin McEntee to put on the gloves as Redan stepped up to retake.

The Chelsea forward made no mistake with his second attempt and sent McEntee the wrong way while also sending the Netherlands into the semi-finals, where they will face host nation England on Thursday.
