The Hondarribia-born coach spoke about his future to 'El Larguero', and stated that Real Sociedad don't currently meet his criteria.

Unai Emery has distanced himself from the Real Sociedad job. Recently-appointed Director of Sport Roberto Olabe had placed Emery top of his list of candidates for the coaching job in San Sebastián next season but it seems the search for a new coach will continue. La Real have been in contact with Emery and while talks have gone well, it seems that he is not planning on returning to Guipuzcoa just yet and AS understands that Asier Garitano is favourite to take the Real Sociedad job this summer.

Emery states coaching criteria

Emery told El Larguero that he will be looking to take on a team who will be competing in European competition when he moves on from PSG at the end of the season. "I'm relaxed about it all, it's true that I have received a wealth of offers and right now I am in the process of strengthening my own coaching team and the staff that work alongside me. On a sporting level, what I want is to maintain the status we are in and keep working for a side who is competing in either the Champions League or the Europa League. I have offers to coach in different leagues but I want to continue to be involved in European competition. Aside from that, I am also looking for a club with good training facilities, somewhere where I feel comfortable and then obviously there is the economic side which is also important. With all of that in mind, I don't feel under any pressure and I have been listening to the various options open to me; later on we'll see which ones come to fruition".

Family and friends back home

The coach, who was born just a few kilometres from San Sebastián in Hondarribia, isn't completely ruling out a return to LaLiga. "The other day I was chatting to an  Argentinean coach and he told me he has never felt more at home than in Spain. I've got my circle of family in friends in Valencia where my son is - in San Sebastián where my mum, my brothers and friends are, and I also have friends in Madrid. I am in touch with everyone I know in Spain from Paris. I know the Spanish league and obviously the language isn't going to be a problem for me - and that's important when it comes to getting ideas across to the players. Going back to Spain isn't something I have ruled out - I am open to everything".
