Atlético Madrid are currently working to offer the Antoine Griezmann a series of assurances to make sure he stays at the club, an issue which has become even more pressing after their Europa League success and the striker's world-class demolishing of Marseille in the final.
Griezmann has been negotiating his contract renewal for over a month now and, although Atlético are not keen to release numbers, there has been talk of the Frenchman earning 20 million euros per season after tax. He knows that very few clubs will offer his such a sum and Cerezo and Gil Marín have made it clear that he is the leading light in the club's future projects and want to reflect that with suitable wages - only the likes of Messi, Cristiano and Neymar earn more.
The club's board have also put forward their plans for the 2018-19 season and have promised Griezmann that the best players in the current squad will be going nowhere and if anything they will be strengthening with new high-profile signings. Above all, they have assured him that if he wants to win trophies then Atlético and their ambitions is the best place for him. There is also the promise of improved facilities - a fully finished stadium and a new training complex near the Wanda Metropolitano.
One final selling point is the fact that Griezmann, despite walking down a rocky road at points, is a darling of the Atleti faithful, a standing he would struggle to find at Barcelona with the idolised Messi, Piqué and Busquets. At Barcelona he would just be another player. At Atleti he is the main man.
