Berizzo on the verge of signing up as new Athletic boss

The Lions are preparing to offer the former Sevilla boss, who had offers from LaLiga, France, Germany and the Premier League, a one-year deal.

Athletic Bilbao are set to announce Eduardo Berizzo as their new manager, replacing Cuco Ziganda after the former Bilbao Athletic coach’s underwhelming season at the helm of the Lions draws to a close this weekend with a final home game against Espanyol.

Berizzo is to be handed a one-year contract with the option of a second season at San Mamés on the table if he gets the club back into Europe for the 2019-20 campaign.

The Argentinean coach, who was sacked by Sevilla last December, has not been short of offers from within Spain and further afield. Nice were particularly keen on snapping him up and Villarreal, Espanyol and Alavés all made inquiries, with the latter eventually settling on Abelardo, who guided them to Primera safety. Berizzo was also offered two jobs in Chile but has elected to take on the challenge at San Mamés with Ziganda’s tenure leaving the club just above the relegation zone with a game to play.

Athletic to ring the squad changes next season

Berizzo’s first task will be to configure his squad for next season. Three loan players, Álex Remiro, Unai López and Asier Villalibre, are due to return while Guruzeta, Andoni López and Iñigo Vicente are to be promoted from Bilbao Athletic.

The Lions have already made three signings for next season, Ander Capa, Dani García and Cristian Ganea while the board are keen on Newcastle’s Mikel Merino, Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera and PSG left back Yuri Berchiche.
