Atlético Madrid are celebrating on the double. They won the Europa League on Wednesday with their men's team and then the women's team collected the Liga Iberdrola. They all gathered at City Hall and were welcomed by the mayor, Manuela Carmena.
After a rendition of "We are the Champions" and plenty of cries for "Atleeeeeti", Carmena congratulated the two teams. "It's fantastic to have Madrid full of champions. Thank you for bringing us so much joy," she said.
And then the two captains took to the floor. First, Amanda, one of the stars in the women's team spoke and thanked the club "for the chance to enjoy this moment together with the lads", and also thanked her teammates and member of Atleti Femenino. Gabi echoed those statements and dedicated the victory to the city. He also said it "is a privilege to share these moments with you," as he congratulated the femenino team. He also had words for his teammates, "We are a peerless and historic group. We will go down in the annals of the club."
It was then Cerezo, the club president's, turn. He said it was a proud week for Atlético and a culmination of a historic season, that started with the opening of the Wanda Metropolitano. "In the year of the inauguration of the best stadium in Europe, we have won a European title and we can finish second in the league. For that, we can be proud and happy. But you have to try to improve on that next year, Diego, and play in the final of the Champions League in our stadium. I hope that within a year we are here with that title. Diego, why are you laughing? You're going to score goals...I'm talking to Costa, who's laughing."
