Fernando Hierro takes over as Spain coach

Fernando Hierro takes over as Spain coach

The Spanish FA have named Hierro as the replacement for Julen Lopetegui who was fired this morning after agreeing to take over at Real Madrid

The Spanish FA have announced that Fernando Hierro will take over as Spain coach for the World Cup in Russia. The move came after FA president Luis Rubiales fired existing coach Julen Lopetegui at a press conference earlier today, after the coach had agreed to take over at Real Madrid after the World Cup.

Hierro spoke to the press this afternoon after accepting the job.

Hierro to take over as Spain coach

Fernando Hierro was Spain's Sporting Director and had urged Rubiales not to fire Lopetegui just two days before Spain play Portugal in their opening World Cup match. However Hierro will now take over as Spain coach for the World Cup in Russia.

Hierro press conference

The new Spain coach gave a press conference this afternoon, where he said he'd do as little as possible to change the team and that he was optimistic for Spain's chances at the World Cup. Hierro also took this afternoon's training session with the Spain players, as they prepare for Friday's game against Portugal.
