Spain defender Nacho Fernández, who was used at right back in yesterday's World Cup opener against Portugal faced the media this afternoon. He spoke about the penalty awarded to Cristiano, his first goal as an international, Carvajal, Hierro and De Gea: “We all make mistakes”.
"There was contact" admits Nacho
Penalty decision; Cristiano tripped: "These kinds of moves are very difficult for a defender, there was contact, I touched Cristiano but I tried to withdraw my foot. It happens so fast that it's more difficult than it might seem"
Unity in the Spain squad: "I think the team showed great character and strength in what were difficult moments for everything that happened, and for what we saw during the game, so we can feel happy with how it turned out. In these kinds of competitions character is so important; we showed who we are".
Support for the keeper
De Gea: "He seems fine to me. He knows what happened but as players, we are always exposed to these things. When mishaps happen, we unite and we're all with him 100%. He is a world class goalkeeper and we are lucky to have a player of his calibre. He has no doubts about his own ability and he will bring a lot to the team in the future".
Carvajal: "He's progressing well, he wants to get back in the side as soon as he can and we'll see what Fernando [Hierro] decides to do".
Hierro's leadership qualities
Hierro: "He captained Spain and Real Madrid, and that says everything we need to know. He's been through it all, and if there's anyone who can show us what it means to represent a country at international level, it's him. He can show us a lot. We're proud that he's our coach".
Vital goal: "It was my first goal for Spain and I am very happy about that".
Iran: "We're not having any problems scoring, we have a lot of faith in our forwards. Yesterday we had good sensations and we managed to overcome difficult moments. We're confident and we'll be going out to beat Iran. We're 100% ready for the game".
