Argentina head coach Jorge Sampaoli is set to remain in charge until the end of the Albiceleste's 2018 World Cup campaign, despite rumours of a player revolt in the wake of Thursday's 3-0 group-stage defeat to Croatia.

Sampaoli survives for now, but likely to leave after World Cup

But it is expected that the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) will move to replace the former Chile and Sevilla boss, who took over on a five-year deal last summer, after the tournament in Russia.

Argentina are on the brink of failing to reach the knockout stages after goals by Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic in Nizhny Novgorod left the two-time winners third in Group D with just one point from two games.

It has been reported in Argentina that the squad has called for Sampaoli to be fired, with TyC Sports claiming that the national team's general manager, Jorge Burruchaga, has been approached with a view to taking charge of Tuesday's final group match against Nigeria.

Sacking Sampaoli would cost AFA nearly 20m euros

However, sacking Sampaoli would be likely to cost the AFA - which is already paying off former Argentina bosses Gerardo Martino and Edgardo Bauza - just under 20m euros.

With no provision for Sampaoli's contract to be unilaterally rescinded until after the 2019 Copa América, it is thought that a mutual agreement to part ways will be sought after the World Cup.
