Italian transport ministry's tweet on Cristiano transfer causes stir

The message posted by the national department lasted just two hours before it was deleted, along with an apology to their followers in the country.

The official Twitter feed of Italy's Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport posted the tweet by Juventus confirming that the club had signed Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo. The message they put alongside the tweet did not go down well with the nation they represent, with followers of all colours.

Ministry's Cristiano tweet not popular

The post sat on the ministry's timeline for just a couple of hours before it was removed. But Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport made sure no one missed it writing:

"What a coup, not only for Juventus but, we hope, for Italian football."

Those in charge of communications for the ministerial department, headed by Danilo Toninelli of Movimiento 5 Estrellas (M5S), said sorry to their citizens after deleting the tweet:

"We apologise for the deleted tweet, caused by a simple change of accounts".

Turin Mayor welcomes Cristiano

There was another formal congratulations sent out from the mayor of Turin, Chiara Appendino. The councilor of the Piedmont region's capital made it a visual welcome using images of the city and wrote:

"Welcome Cristiano. Indeed you had good reasons to come to Turin. Congratulations to Juventus for the great achievement."
