The Camp Nou had wanted to pay in installments but Sevilla refused to budge so the full €35m has been paid. The defender is due to join his new club on Thursday.

Barcelona have met the minimum release clause in Sevilla defender Clément Lenglet’s contract and the Frenchman is expected to be given permission by his current club to travel to Catalonia on Thursday to finalise the long-anticipated move.

Baça have been attempting to reach a deal with Sevilla for the France under-21 international for some time but the Sánchez Pizjuán board stood firm in their position that they would not accept any kind of payment in installments, forcing the Camp Nou to deposit the full amount of 35 million euros to trigger Lenglet’s clause.

Lenglet to join Barcelona on Thursday

Lenglet is currently at Sevilla’s pre-season training camp in Benidorm but will be cleared to leave to undergo a medical and sign a contract at Camp Nou.

Barça’s desire to beat other suitors to the highly rated 23-year-old prompted the decision to meet the full amount of Lenglet’s buy-out clause. Manchester United had also been credited with an interest in a player whose release clause was set low by the standards of the current market, which saw Virgil van Dijk join Liverpool from Southampton for 80 million euros and Aymeric Laporte move from Athletic to Manchester City for 60 million in the January window.
