Colombia revel in England's World Cup woe after tabloid slur

Portada del diario The Sun sobre Harry Kane y la selección de Colombia.

The Sun published a back page mocking the Latin American nation's association with cocaine, prompting retaliation after England's exit.

The national media in Colombia revelled in England’s continuing years of World Cup hurt after elimination at the hands of Croatia in reaction to a tabloid innuendo published in the The Sun ahead of the game between the two countries, which England scraped through on penalties.

The UK tabloid used a play on words featuring the England captain, Harry Kane, to allude to Colombia’s historical association with cocaine, while also suggesting that Colombia’s only other contributions to the world were Shakira and coffee.

The attempt at humour did not go down well in Colombia and the country's inhabitants bided their time until Gareth Southgate’s side were put out in extra time on Wednesday night.

On Thursday, the reaction to England’s traditional glorious failure was swift and gleeful.
