Argentina: Sampaoli exit agreed

Argentina: Sampaoli exit agreed

The Argentinian Football Association is believed to have agreed compensation with Jorge Sampaoli, who leaves after just 13 months in charge.

The departure of Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli, whose position had been in doubt since the side's disappointing 2018 World Cup campaign, has been finalised.

AFA set to pay Sampaoli 1.6m dollars to end Argentina reign

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) is understood to have agreed a 1.6m-dollar compensation package with Sampaoli - a severance figure far lower than the 20m-dollar fee thought to be in his contract.

There has so far been no official confirmation of the former Sevilla coach's exit.

Departure hastened after refusal to coach Under-20s

Last Monday, the AFA had said that Sampaoli would take charge of Argentina Under-20s at this month's L'Alcúdia international tournament in Spain, with the governing body's bosses then due to run the rule over his future with the seniors.

However, Sampaoli finally rejected the plan, prompting talks between the AFA and his representatives over a parting of ways just 13 months into his reign.

Under-fire Sampaoli oversees poor World Cup campaign

After securing World Cup qualification following his June 2017 appointment in place of Edgardo Bauza, a much-criticised Sampaoli led an underwhelming Argentina to a last-16 exit at the hands of France, having required a late winner against Nigeria to avoid group-stage elimination.

In total, the 58-year-old oversaw seven wins, four draws and four defeats in his 15 games in charge of the Albiceleste.
