Guardiola backs 'exceptional' Luis Enrique for Spain

Pointing to his trophy-winning success at Barcelona, the Manchester City manager believes his friend has what it takes to return Spanish football to the top.

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola praised the decision to make Luis Enrique Martinez the manager of the Spanish national team, saying that it was "exceptional" for the country and pointing to his excellent CV for the good years he had at FC Barcelona.

Luis Enrique good for Spain says Pep

"For me the choice of Luis Enrique is an exceptional one for Spanish football," said Guardiola ahead of his City side 1-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in their first pre-season match.

"As well as being a friend, Luis Enrique has shown his quality with the Barcelona youth team, and especially with the first team, where he achieved an incredible number of titles.

"It's sensational for the team and for him, and I wish him the best," the former-Barça man added.

Guardiola, who is beginning his third season with the Manchester club, has expressed an interest in taking over the reins of Spain at some point in his career.
