Primera captains to take on LaLiga chief over USA plans

El Madrid celebra un gol durante la gira estadounidense

The 20 top-flight captains will meet on Wednesday to draft a statement against the LFP's plan to stage official Liga matches in America.

The captains of the 20 clubs in Primera División are to meet on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Spanish Association of Footballers (AFE) to draft a communique in response to the decision by the Spanish Professional Football League (LFP) to stage games in the USA.

The players’ union, led by AFE president David Aganzo, are to firmly express their negative stance on the idea of LFP president Javier Tebas to play official Liga games during the regular season on foreign soil, an agreement that was reached between LaLiga and a US firm without consulting either AFE or the Spanish Football Federation, which is also against the plan. AFE has already voiced its opposition and on Wednesday will lay it out in writing, with the signatures of the 20 captains.

Liga kick-off times and dates to be contested

Also on the agenda at the meeting is the kick-off times imposed on Primera clubs by the LFP, another unilateral bone of contention. The players’ union will express its concerns about staging games on Friday and Monday, which has proved unpopular with fans and places demands on a small number of clubs (those involved in Europe are exempt), and about scheduling, with games occasionally starting on one day and finishing on another, as was the case with Real Madrid-Getafe on Sunday.
