Girona FC this afternoon published a statement confirming that they have received a proposal from LaLiga to organise their home league game against Barcelona in the United States. The club said that it was yet to be confirmed if the game would be organised in Miami.
Girona accept proposal to play match in the USA v Barcelona
Girona say they have accepted the proposal on the grounds that they consider it is a "great opportunity for growth", not just for "the club itself but for the city and region". In the statement the club notes that it was fighting for survival just three years ago and the aim of the club now is to consolidate their position in the first division. They consider that playing a game against Barcelona in the United States would be “another step in line with the efforts and excitement of playing in football’s elite, after the efforts we have all made in recent years and which have taken us to the Primera División”.
Details of Girona v Barcelona yet to be confirmed
According to the club, while the details of the match are being worked out, with various different issues to be resolved, Girona and LaLiga are working together on a way of compensating the season ticket holders if the game is, in the end, played abroad. Girona say this is one of their most pressing issues in terms of holding the game in the US and they are looking at a number of solutions. They also note that many season ticket holders have confirmed to the club that they are in favour of the initiative.
