Spanish golf star murdered

According to the Ames police in Iowa, USA, at 10:24 on Monday, they identified a golf bag in the Coldwater golf course with no one around it. A short distance away from the bag they located the player's lifeless body. Initial investigations by the Ames police have determined that Barquín was assaulted and that she died during the attack.

Ames' security forces have identified and detained a suspect, Collin Daniel Richards, 22, whom they accuse of first-degree murder.

Barquín, from the Cantabrian municipality of Puente de San Miguel and a student at the University of Iowa State until last year, was one of the most promising young Spanish golfers on the scene. In 2018 she had already seen triumphs in tournaments such as the Big 12 Championship and the Ladies Amateur European Championship held at the Penati Golf Club in Slovakia. Additionally, Barquin was chosen last year as the Female Athlete of the Year by the University of Iowa State and managed to qualify for the Women's US Open, although eventually not making the cut.
