Juan Martínez Munuera first ref to whistle a Madrid derby with VAR
The 36-year-old referee will ref Atlético Madrid versus Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu as the first man to have VAR in such a game in LaLiga.
Juan Martínez Munuera wil ref the Madrid derby on Saturday night and he becomes the first referee to have VAR at his disposal in such a game. The 36-year-old has reffed both Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid this season with the rojiblancos drawing with Eibar and Real Madrid beating Girona.
He used the VAR system in that Girona game when he gave Marc Muniesa a yellow card after Bernardo was wrongly accused in that game. He also awarded Real Madrid two penalties during the tie.
Munuera is also the last Spanish referee who expelled Simeone. It was in the return of the quarterfinals of the Copa last year, against Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán. He also sent Griezmann off in Girona last season, when he called the ref a "cagón" after he refused to give the French attacker a penalty.
