A shift towards a combined league featuring clubs from USA, Mexico and Canada seems closer after the president of Liga MX Enrique Bonilla talked favourably about the possibility of the initiative that would coincide with the 2026 World Cup. The 2026 competition will be staged in the three nations with the view that a combined league would boost interest in each respective country and have a positive impact on the World Cup.

"There is a possibility that a combined North American league could come about. We need to investigate the pros and cons but it would be seen by many as a great way of growing and becoming competitive. If we can host a World Cup together then we could create a combined league that would help all three nations grow the game".

At present, teams from  each of the 2026 host nations come to face each other in the CONCACAF Champions League but Bonilla maintains that any combined venture would be about growth of the game and not a initiative based on monetary gain.

"With the great opportunity of holding the biggest event in world football in 2026 we should look at new ways of doing things in a better way", concluded the Liga MX president.
