The former Real Madrid coach gave an interview with Radio Rai in which he discussed the side's issues in front of goal and stated that the Inter striker is the answer.
Former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello has urged the Bernabéu board to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icari “immediately” as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo with Julen Lopetegui’s side on a barren run in front of goal stretching over four and a half games, a run that has gone equalled since 1985.
Speaking to Radio Rai in his native Italy, Capello said: “I am a fan of Icardi. If I was Real Madrid I would sign him immediately. He is a specialist in the penalty area like Cristiano Ronaldo was during his later time at Madrid. He is a player who sees and feels the goal. He knows how to move in the area in a way few others do. If you play three balls into him, he will hit all three.”
Icardi, who came though the Barcelona system at La Masia between 2008 and 2011 before signing for Sampdoria, has been at Inter Milan since 2013 and has finished as top scorer in Serie A on two occasions, in 2014-15 (22 goals) and 2017-18 (29 goals).
Madrid may go back in for Icardi in January
Madrid have been linked with a move for Icardi before with former Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli stating last January that the 25-year-old was “tempted” by a move to the Bernabéu.
Real will bide their time before showing their hand but if Lopetegui cannot coax more regular goals from his current set of forwards the Liga side may well go back into the market in January to source a guarantee. With 112 goals in 190 appearances for Inter, Icardi may fit the bill.
