South African batsman JP Duminy has been ruled out of the Proteas' limited-overs tour of Australia, starting later this month, because of a shoulder injury, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced in a statement on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old is the second batsman that will miss the tour because of injury. He joins Hashim Amla, who is out with a finger injury.

Duminy to undergo surgery

According to the statement by CSA, Duminy will undergo surgery on his right shoulder after aggravating an old injury during a series against Zimbabwe which ended last weekend.

Along with three one-day internationals and a T20 match against Australia, he will also miss the Mzansi Super League (MSL), which is scheduled to take place from 16 November to 16 December. For this competition, he had been named as a marquee player for the Cape Town Blitz team.

"The injury will require surgical management thus ruling him out of the immediate tour of Australia and the upcoming MSL. At the moment we can’t say how long he will be out for, that is dependent on the results from the surgery," the statement quoted South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee as saying.

The Proteas' manager added that it was not possible at this stage to estimate how long Duminy will be out of action.
