REAL MADRID

Florentino: Solari the 5th mid-season managerial replacement

Florentino: Solari the 5th mid-season managerial replacement

The only mid-season managerial replacement during Florentino Perez' run as president to win a trophy was Zidane when he arrived in 2016.

The dismissal of Julen Lopetegui marks the fifth time a manager has been sacked during the season by Florentino Perez. Only once has that switch resulted in a Champions League title but the other three times did see an improvement in the team's form.

The first substitute under the current president was García Remón, who arrived on the bench on 20th September 2004 to replace José Antonio Camacho and he left on December 30th 2004. During that period, Real Madrid played 20 games with 12 wins, four draws and four defeats. They were 8th in the league when he arrived and were 2nd when he left but 10 points behond the leaders, Barcelona. In Europe, they played five, won three and drew two. They also eliminated Leganés and Tenerife in the second and third round of respectively.

Vanderlei Luxemburgo was presented as the coach on 30th December 2004 to replace the man who had just left and mentioned earlier. He would not even see a year in the job when he left on 4th December 2005. During those 339 days in which los Blancos played 45 games, they won 28, drew seven and lost 10. They finished second, which is where they were when he took them over although he did manage to get the differencedown from 10 to four points. He started the next season but was dismissed with the team sitting in fifth. They were eliminated by Juventus in the Champions League in his first year and won three, drew one and lost one in the following season before he was sent packing. Valladolid kicked them out of the Copa del Rey as he was unable to win a trophy during his spell on the bench.

Lopez Caro was Luxemburgo's replacement in December of 2005 and only lasted until June 1st 2006. During those 179 days, they played 33 games, won 17, drew 10 and lost six. he took over the side in sixth and left them in second. Arsenal dumped them out of the Champions League in the last 16 and they suffered a similar end in the Copa del Rey semi-final against Zaragoza.

Zinedine Zidane landed at the Santiago Bernabéu on 4th January 2016 to replace Rafa Benítez and left the club on the 31st May 2018 but not before he could make history. He lasted 878 days in charge and played in 149 games with 105 wins, 28 draws and 16 losses. Upon his arrival, they were third but they finished second and the year after they won the league before finished second. They won three Champions League in three attempts.
