Marco Asensio has reiterated his role in the Real Madrid team in an interview with Spanish national broadcaster RTVE ahead of Spain’s Nations League match against Croatia. Despite the criticism he received for suggesting it up to other more experienced players to “carry the team” in a recent interview, Asensio again stated that senior players should bear the weight of responsibility when things are not going well at the Bernabéu.

“I’m still young, there are players that have to lead the team. I want to make a bigger contribution to the club, to feel more important and I also need to have that confidence and for the club to give me that responsibility,” Asensio said during the interview.

Asensio: "When you have a good game, you're the best"

The Madrid winger also spoke about Real’s recent struggles and the departure of Julen Lopetegui. “It seems like the whole world came down on me. When you have a good game, you’re the best. And when you don’t hit one into the top corner people get on your back a bit. This bad month we’ve had hasn’t made me change the way I think and I know the situation will change.”

Of the departed Lopetegui, Asensio noted: “He and the whole coaching staff did a great job but it’s results that decide things. Now we’re on a good run, things are coming together better for us and I think we’ll have a great season.”
