Cavani on PSG front three: "We can't carry on like this"

Edinson Cavani spoke to Radio Montecarlo about his club, Paris Saint-Germain, and discussed his spat with Neymar in Uruguay's loss to Brazil.

Edinson Cavani was interviewed by Christophe Dugarry on the former France international's programme on Radio Montecarlo, and discussed his relationship with Paris Saint-Germain strike partners Kylian Mbappé and Neymar.

"We have three players whose quality makes them important [to the team], and it's normal for us all to want to score," Cavani told Dugarry. "The role of the coach is to gel his players, both in attack and in defence. [PSG boss] Thomas Tuchel speaks to us [about this] from time to time, but I think it isn't easy."

"The work we do day in, day out will bring success"

Despite the difficulties of fitting so many stars into a playing system, and PSG's front three not always clicking as might have been hoped, Cavani believes that hard work will bring its rewards. "It isn't easy for the coach," he said, "but I think that, little by little, the work we do day in, day out will bring success.

"We'll get to grips with what's best, what can be done for the team to be successful together and win big things. We have to bring to bear the qualities we have for the good of the team. That's how we can achieve big things. As soon as we understand that, we can achieve many things, because we can't carry on like this."

The Uruguay international also offered his thoughts on his country's 1-0 friendly defeat to Brazil on Friday, in which he was involved in a disagreement with Neymar over a heavy tackle he put in on his PSG colleague. "These things happen in football," he said. "We're friends, brothers. But you want to win and fight hard for your national team. I didn't do anything; I didn't touch him. I went to speak to him and told him that I hadn't touched him, that's all."

Frenchman should win Ballon d'Or, says Cavani

Finally, Cavani gave his opinion on who should win the next Ballon d'Or, revealing his belief that a French player should scoop the award. "[Raphael] Varane may well be up there," he said. "[Antoine] Griezmann, Mbappé..."

He went on: "For me, a Frenchman should win it. There are other players, but it should be a Frenchman; they've won big things. It should be one of those three. [Luka] Modric? He had a great season, but Varane won the Champions League and the World Cup. Modric was a finalist [at Russia 2018] and had a great season, but Varane deserves it more."
