Benzema: "My goal against Karius wasn't as easy as it looks"

During an extensive interview with Real Madrid TV which was broadcast on Thursday night, Karim Benzema was asked about his opening goal in the Champions League final against Liverpool which proved decisive in helping Zidane's team lift the Duodécima. Loris Karius didn't appear to spot the Frenchman lurking as he attempted to roll the ball out of the Liverpool area. Quick-thinking Benzema took a chance and stuck out his right foot - making contact with the ball to send it bobbling towards goal and inside the post.

Benzema pounces

Joined on set by Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa - curiously, both former Liverpool players, Benzema recalled his big moment in Kiev - one which Karius is undoubtedly still having nightmares about. “The goal? It wasn’t just about that for me. I think that was probably one of the best games I have ever played for Real Madrid – in terms of possession, first touch of the ball, dribbling, shooting… everything. And that goal isn’t as easy to score as it might appear on television. A lot of people might think it’s easy but it isn’t because it requires a lot of attention and anticipation. For me, a striker needs to be able to anticipate situations like that”.
