Barça defender Gerard Piqué buys lowly FC Andorra
The leading newspaper in the principality "El Diari d’Andorra" claims that the Barcelona defender has purchased the outfit via his Kosmos holding.
According to journalist Iván Álvarez writing for principality based Diari d’Andorra, Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has bought non-league side FC Andorra via his Kosmos group. Recent changes to the law have enabled the player to complete the purchase and the intention is to build a club with sights on playing in the upper echelons of the Spanish league system.
The move is consistent with declarations made by the player a few weeks ago when he claimed in L’Equipe Magazine that he was exploring the possibility of acquiring a football club. The conditions of the purchase have yet to be made public but such is the news in the principality, that it makes it onto the leading daily in the area today.
Fútbol Club Andorra were founded in 1942 and currently play in the regional Primera Catalana (Fifth tier of the domestic game). The Andorran side won the Copa Catalunya in 1994 and have enjoyed many seasons in Spain's third tier, 2B.
