Copa del Rey 2018/19: Round of 16 draw, as it happened

Copa del Rey live online: last 16

Real Madrid have a chance to avenge last year's exit from the competition as they face Leganes in the round of 16. Barça face Levante.

Real Madrid were paired with local rivals Leganes in the Spanish Cup last 16 draw on Thursday, the side that eliminated them at the quarter-final stage last season.

Leganes earned an historic victory to humble the European champions on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw, reaching the semi-finals for the first time, although they were beaten by Sevilla.

Meanwhile reigning champions and record 30-time cup winners Barcelona will face east coast side Levante.

The only side outside the top flight, second division Sporting Gijon, play Valencia, while last season's runners-up Sevilla face struggling Athletic Bilbao.

The other fixtures are Getafe v Real Valladolid, Real Betis v Real Sociedad, Girona v Atletico Madrid and Villarreal v Espanyol.

The first legs will take place between January 8-10, with the second legs a week later, January 15-17.

Copa del Rey Round of 16 draw: as it happened

Copa del Rey 2018/19 Round of 16:

That's a wrap from the RFEF HQ in Las Rozas today. Thanks for you time and well leave you with a reminder of how the Copa del Rey 2018/19 round of 16 looks:

No one tie really stands out, but it will be interesting to see Madrid face last year's rival Leganes who eliminated Zidane's men from the competition. Athletic v Sevilla is another interesting tie between two "Copa" greats.

Kick-off times-dates will be allocated I'd anticipate by midday tomorrow so fans can start to make plans.

Don't forget, first round games will be played on Jan. 8, 9 and 10 with the return legs being staged a week later.

Recap:

That leaves just Villarreal who face Espanyol

Girona out next ... they face Atletico Madrid

Emilio Buitragueño next up with the former Real Madrid man on hand to select the final round of games....

Next tie sees Valencia CF pitted against Sporting Gijon (first leg in El Molinon)

Athletic Bilbao next out with Los Leones facing Sevilla

Guillermo Amor (Barcelona) on hand to draw the next two games....

Next up.... Levante UD and they face Barça

next tie will see Betis ...the Andalusian outfit will face Real Sociedad

Sporting president Javier Fernandez on hand to draw the next two games

Next game pits.... Getafe.... the "Azulones" face Valladolid

First team out is Real Madrid.... Solari's men will face Leganes

We're in the Copa del Rey zone as we're shown a showreel of goals from the previous round ....

Another new feature that has been introduced to improve the Copa del Rey is the selection of a venue ahead of the final rounds .... ie  we'll know the stadium in question before we reach the final stages.... an improivement from the now dull "Groundhog Day" situation of bickering over a final venue.

Next up ...the biggie....Copa del Rey 2018/19 Round of 16...

Athletic-Atleti and Levante UD v Betis completes the draw

Barça-Madrid CFF / Real Sociedad-Rayo first ties in the 1/4 final

Another big step for the Copa del Rey will be the use of VAR in the fothcoming rounds of the competition.

Barcelona are current holders of the cup and along with Levante Femininas are the leading sides in the competition with six titles a piece.

Next up will be the quarter final of the 2018/19 Copa de la Reina.... 8 sides remain: Barça, Atleti, Athletic, Madrid CFF, Rayo, Betis, R. Sociedad, Sevilla and Levante

Competed draw for the Copa de la Federacion 18/19 last 16.....

Just a brief reminder to late-comers wondering what this Copa de la Federacion mularkey is all about ....This is the equivalent of England's FA Trophy. A competition where only teams from the Segunda División B, the Tercera División and occasionaly Preferente Regional can compete.

Copa de la Federacion draw almost 3/4 complete....

We'll never, never ever tire of this iconic Scottish Cup draw with Rod Stewart on selection duty....An iconic moment in the game ; )

Good news, they're ploughing the Copa del Federacion draw at a brisk rate ....

Dont forget folks.... the Spanish FA have confirmed the draw series for today's Super Sorteo .... first up....Copa de la Federacion, then Copa de la Reina and then the big one ....Copa del Rey draw.... I'd anticapate a 30 min or so wait until the Copa del Rey draw but we'll bring you the two other draws as they happen too...

We're live at the RFEF HQ in Las Rozas as the audience is being treated to some freestyle display.

Galician side Pontevedra are the current Copa de la Federacion holders:

What is the Copa de la Federación Española I hear you scream .....This is the equivalent of England's FA Trophy. A competition where only teams from the Segunda División B, the Tercera División and occasionaly Preferente Regional can compete.

So the RFEF (Spanish FA) has confirmed the order of the day .... first up Copa de la Federacion followed by Copa de la Reina and saving the Copa del Rey to last. We'll keep you posted with these earlier draws too and then bring you ball by ball for the Copa del Rey draw.....

The 3 trophies are in place .... Copa de la Federacion, Copa del Rey (centre) & Copa de la Reina

There is only one (slight) conditioning factor in today's draw and that is that Sporting Gijon will stage their first leg game at El Molinon....another subtle factor in helping the bigger sides.

When are these round of 16 games I hear you ask .... Jan. 8, 9 & 10 for the first leg with the return legs taking place a week later

Potential blockbuster clashes in store in today's draw: A "Clasico" - Barça-Real Madrid.... Madrid derby....R.Madrid- Atleti....Seville derby, Basque derby ....Valencia derby ...

Potential opposition for FC Barcelona women's team:

Today's draw is being dubbed as a "Super Sorteo" by the Spanish FA. In addition to the Copa del Rey draw we'll have the  quarter final draw for the women's Copa de la Reina draw and also the lower league side based Copa de la Federacion draw.

Much has been said about a lack of "magic of the cup" here in Spain with the early round draw procedure and two legged home and away format heavily tilted to favour the bigger clubs. The composition of the last 16 attests to that anaylsis and the good news for fans of "David vs. Golitah" encounters is the news that the Spanish FA are to amend the format when the current television deal expires.

A recap of the 16 teams in today's draw: Athletic, Atleti, Barça, Betis, Espanyol, Getafe, Girona, Leganes, Levante, R.Madrid, R. Sociedad, Sevilla, Sporting, Valencia, Valladolid & Villarreal.

Draw time is 1600 CET and the draw "package" also features the draw for the next round of the "Women's Copa del la Reina and the lower league Copa de la Federacion. What draw is up first is anyone's guess, as yes we're dealing with the Spanish FA here !

Hello and welcome to our live coverage as we  bring you the draw for the last 16 of the 2018/19 Copa del Rey

Copa del Rey: Round of 16 draw: preview

And then there were 16....

Sixteen sides go into the "hat" as we learn the pairings for the next round of the 2018/19 Copa del Rey. 15 sides are from the top flight and just Sporting Gijon flying the flag for the lower league sides after the Segunda division outfit overcame SD Eibar.

Today's draw is open so any combination is possible with the next round of games taking place on January 8,9 and 10 with the return legs a week later.
