The former France star, who has also had spells in charge of African nations Gabon, Mali and Senegal, will begin work on 1 January.

The Tunisia Football Federation (FTF) has appointed former France international Alain Giresse as the new coach of the North African country's national team.

The 66-year-old will begin work on 1 January and has agreed a deal running until June 2020.

“Today a contract has been signed in the Tunisian Football Federation headquarters with new national team coach Alain Giresse, the contract runs between January 1, 2019, and June 30, 2021, and could be extended,” the FTF announced.

He replaces Faouzi Benzarti, who was sacked in October four days after qualifying the team for the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

Experience in Africa

Giresse played in midfield for France alongside Michel Platini in the team that won the 1984 European Championship. In total, he earned 47 caps for Les Bleus.

As a coach, the former midfielder has worked mainly with African sides. He was previously in charge of Gabon (2006-2010), Mali (2010-2012) and Senegal (2013-2015).
