The Argentinean picked up his fifth European Golden Boot on Tuesday and dedicated it to his teammates: "I have the best players in the world around me."
“I’m in the best team in the world and with the best teammates, and that makes it much easier,” Leo Messi said as he picked up his fifth European Golden Boot as the highest league scorer on the continent in 2017-18 with 34 LaLiga goals.
Messi thus becomes the first player in history to win the award five times, having previously picked up the trophy in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2017. The Argentinean also moves ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, the only other player in history to have won four times.
Messi: "I didn't expect all of this when I started out"
“The truth is I didn’t expect all of this when I started out,” Messi said during the presentation in Barcelona. "My dream was to become a professional footballer and be successful. I love football but I never imagined so much. It is the result of hard work and effort. I have the best players in the world in their positions around me and I’m in the best team in the world and so it’s much easier to achieve objectives like this as others of my teammates have done [Luis Suárez won the Golden Boot in 2016].”
And Messi promised that he would still be looking for more: “Thanks to God I feel very good in terms of motivation and physically. The years are rolling by and I try to look after myself, even more so now because the games are non-stop. There’s little time to rest and I like to work so that this carries on in this way.”
