Alberto Moreno, angry with Klopp and keen to return to Spain
The Liverpool left-back, who has struggled to settle at Anfield, says he wasn't happy with how Klopp treated him after he fell injured this time last season.
Alberto Moreno chatted to Onda Cero's El Transistor programme last night and spoke openly about his situation at Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp. The left-back has struggled to settle at Anfield and has bore a lot of criticism from supporters. The injury which he sustained this time last season together with the arrival of Andy Robertson has left him with few chances of returning to first team action and with his contract up for review in June, he is expected to move on this summer on a free transfer. The player admits that he might leave Anfield as early as next month, when he will be able to start negotiating with other clubs.
Robertson locks down left-back position
Injury followed by the subs' bench. "I fell injured last December when I was in a great moment of form - the best of my career, I was sidelined for two months and lost my place in the side. I didn't like the way Klopp favoured Robertson - the only other left-back apart from me; now we're at the same level - I thought I deserved another chance after recovering and I'll keep training hard until that moment arrives. I wasn't happy about it, I have to say but I'll keep working and whenever Klopp needs me, I'll be there.
"I lost my place because I got injured giving everything for the team - not because I was playing badly. I thought when I recovered that at least I deserved an opportunity. I kept training but it was always Robertson, Robertson, Robertson... So I wasn't very happy with how the coach handled it but at the end of the day, he's the coach and he's the one who decides. He hasn't changed the way he is with me, the situation is normal - he greets me, if I say something funny he laughs but he's said nothing to me about why I've been dropped".
Winter transfer window. "I feel part of the team successes, and besides, I'm the one who brings a ray of sunshine and a smile to the dressing room although Spanish humour doesn't really translate. If I tell a joke, the only ones who get it are Firmino and Fabinho. The club had planned to renew my contract and we still talking about that but no agreement has been reached, the transfer window opens next month so we'll see what happens.
"I'll be free to move on in June if I don't renew with Liverpool. I've always had it in mind to return to Spain one day and to be honest, I'm a bit fed up with the cold weather here now".
Table toppers. "To see the team unbeaten in the first half of the season... you can tell the quality that's there. It's really nice to see the team doing so well, we've improved a lot in defence and it's the same up front, the forwards, Firmino, Mané and Salah are putting everything away. The team's really noticed the difference after signing Van Dijk and Alisson. We have to continue that way. Apart from individual players, we are a very united squad - like a family".
Ramos-Salah problem. "Those who claimed that Salah wouldn't perform as well this season have had to eat their words. Here, no one remembers the incident with Sergio Ramos".
