Diego Godín 'has agreed' two-year deal with Inter Milan - reports

Sky: el Inter tiene el 'sí' de Godín, firmará por dos años.

Diario As

According to Sky Italia, the Atlético de Madrid centre-back, has agreed a two-year deal with the option of a third although nothing has been signed, AS understands.

In Italy, it's taken as read that Diego Godín is on the verge of signing for Inter Milan. According to Sky Sport, the Uruguayan defender will move to Milan as a free agent in June, signing a two-year contract with the option of a third.

Over the next few days, both parties will continue working on the operation but it seems that Inter already have a verbal agreement in place with the player, who is set to become CEO Giuseppe Marotta's first signing since his arrival from Juventus.

Reports on Sky claim that a medical will be arranged for Godín over the coming weeks to complete the operation. Back on 31 December, Corriere dello Sport published a piece on Inter's interest for the Atleti central defender.

If Godín' switch to Inter is confirmed, it would signal the departure of a long-standing severant for Atlético - the defender is the 10th player to have made the most appearances for the club (368) and the foreign player to have played the most matches with the Rojiblancos. Curiously, the second non-Spanish player in the appearances ranking is Filipe Luis with 318 games, who also has not renewed and is now free to open talks with other clubs - like Juanfran.

Nothing signed

While Sky Italia assure that Godín has approved the move, AS understands that nothing has been signed - at least by the Uruguayan, nor has a pre-contract been drawn up. There's no question about Inter's interest in the player but Godín also has commitments to fullfil with Atlético where he is the team captain. Inter maybe Godín's preference right now but AS understands that there is no knowledge of the Inter-Godín operation in the back offices at Atleti. The club policy of offering players over the age of 30 year-on-year extensions, in this case, is at a standstill and there have been no recent talks with Godín or his agents. In the meantime, Inter continue to push hard to get a deal through - like Juventus and AC Milan did in recent transfer windows. Age doesn't come into it - Godín will turn 33 in February but he showed no signs of slowing up - a few weeks ago, he played for half an hour with an injured hamstring before hitting a stoppage-time winner against Athletic Club.
