ATLÉTICO MADRID - REAL MADRID

Lucas Hernández: "Two years ago I rejected an offer from Madrid"

Lucas Hernández en la entrevista para As

DIARIO AS

The French defender spoke to AS on the eve of the Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano and confirmed that his contractual situation will be resolved by season end.

A few months ago you were close to moving to Bayern Munich. Can you tell Aleti fans as to how that situation transpired?

To be totally honest, my personal situation changed and I had to make a decision that wasn't all about me. It's true that in the transfer window there was a bid from another major European side and the first thing I did was relay that to Atletico. They made it clear that it was not an option they wanted to contemplate and we all agreed to review my situation before the end of the current season.

LUCAS HERNANDEZ

Atlético appear to be prepared to do all in their power for you to stay at the club and are poised to offer a lucrative renewal package...

I'm aware that the club are keen for me to stay but they've also stated that they would respect any decision I make.

Your name has been linked on a number of occasions with Real Madrid, how close were you in wearing the white shirt?

It's true that approximately two years ago Real Madrid made a significant offer via my agent but at the time I felt I owed much to Atlético.

Real Madrid lost Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer but have picked up in recent weeks with Benzema and Vinicius in fine form. Which of the Madrid players worry you ahead of the game?

Real Madrid have a squad full of top players and every player that features in the derby possess the ability to cause problems. What we need to do is be tuned in for the full 90 minutes and that's the key to being able to cope with the problems our opponents will create.

First up Real Madrid, then Juventus in the Champions League. Is it fair to say that the Champions is your main objective?

It's certainly one of our main objectives that's true, but it's not the only one. We still want to compete in LaLiga and our initial focus is on Saturday's game.

How do you see the tie against Juventus?

It's a tough tie and the same can be said from their point of view. Both teams are in good form but there will be time to concentrate on that game. First up we've got to focus on the games against  Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano.

Would it be a dream to reach the Champions League final at the Wanda Metropolitano?

It certainly would. Playing the final at your home ground, with your fans present is a huge motivation. We really want to go as far as we can in the Champions and I feel that Atlético is due a win in a Champions League final.
