It was an eventful night at Old Trafford for the Argentine, who was nudged into the fence by Ashley Young, then had a bottle thrown at him.
Booed and whistled from the start of the Champions League first leg at Old Trafford, barged into the fencing by Ashley Young, and then having a bottle thrown towards him from the stands, this was a rather eventful return to Manchester for PSG's Ángel di Maria. And as expected, UEFA have open disciplinary proceedings against the Premier League club over the incident.
UEFA likely to take action
As the Argentine went to take a throw in, what seems like an angry United fan in the stand decided to throw something of his own. At least one bottle landed near the player who, rather than being disgusted by the stupidity of the actions, picked the bottle up and pretended to drink it.
Barging Di Maria, booing him, and throwing a bottle at him seems to have had the complete opposite effect than intended. Him holding the bottle now a fairly appropriate image for the game.— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) 12 February 2019
That may have been a comical moment from one side's perspective, especially as PSG were in a good position in the game, but UEFA are almost certainly going to fine the Premier League giants when the case is seen on 28 February, which includes another charge of having the stairways blocked. PSG also face charges: conduct of fans who set off fireworks, threw objects, and 'acts of damage and crowd disturbance'.
