Solari to remain as Madrid coach, at least through to Monday

AS has been informed that the Argentine will oversee Sunday's game at Valladolid with his future set to be decided on Monday next as Zidane and Mourinho wait in the wings.

Santiago Solari will be Real Madrid coach at least through to Monday. AS has been informed that the coach will oversee preparation for Sunday's LaLiga game away to Real Valladolid but this is by no means an indication that he will remain as first team coach through to the end of the current campaign. The club board members are expected to make a decision surrounding his future after the weekend fixture.

Two names dominate the debate as to who will be the next incumbent of the Santiago Bernabéu bench with both Zinedine Zidane and Jose Mourinho linked to the position. Both men are currently not in work and both in a position to assume the role immediately with the club feeling that Solari's time has come to a natural end at the club with the Argentine maintaining tense relationships with many key first team players.

Six dismal days

The initial plan which Florentino Perez was initially managing was to sack the coach after the Ajax defeat. However, after a series of internal meetings, this decision has been temporarily put on hold after a final meeting with Director General José Ángel Sánchez late on Thursday evening.

Solari is a man on borrowed time with the outcome of Sunday's game at Zorrilla apparently having little bearing on his fate with his remaining credit running out abruptly after a period of six days which saw Real Madrid eliminated from the Copa del Rey, lose El Clasico at home on Saturday and culminate with un-fancied Ajax dump the holders out of the UEFA Champions League.
