Boiling water thrown on female assistant referee

Rosana Paz, árbitra asistente agredida en Argentina.

Telesol Diario

Fans at the game in Argentina between Marquesado and San Martín attacked Rosana Paz near the end of the game.

Rosana Paz, one of the assistant referees at the game between Marquesado and San Martín in the Liga Sanjuanina, in the Argentinean sixth division, was attacked with boiling water in the final minutes of the match.

The atrocious aggression occurred with two minutes to go before the end of the match, with the home side winning 1-0, when the other assistant referee flagged for a decision against them. Rosana Paz explained what happened: "I felt them throw hot water onto my back. I called for the referee and asked for cold water to be thrown on the area to calm the burning. They wanted to suspend the game, but we reached an agreement to carry on". Paz was taken to hospital where the doctor who attended her told her she had a "serious burn".

Rosana Paz "not going to give in" despite attack

"Whether it's a man or a woman who is attacked, this type of thing can't happen. But I'm not going to give up. I'm going to carry on. It's hard being a woman in football, but I'm not going to give in. I hope I'm picked to referee this weekend", explained Paz.

The president of the Liga Sanjuanina, Alberto Platero, told Telesol Noticias that a report had been sent to the disciplinary bodies for them to apply the "deserved punishment" and said he felt that what had happened "went beyond football".

The president of Marquesado, the home side, gave his version of events: "They say it was a bottle of water that had been left in the stands, it wasn't boiling water. I haven't seen the burns, I was with her and she didn't show us anything. But I don't want to defend the fans either because I know what they are like. If they are going to behave badly they shouldn't go to the game, I don't agree with what they've done, we try to talk to stop them and talk to them."

He also said he would "talk to Rosana Paz to find out how she is and how to collaborate with her".
